I have a 1985 toyota mr2, i got it from a friend and two weeks after owning it i started to hear a clicking noise as if it was the valves, everything told me it was the valves, i opened the engine up, valves were fine seals were good. closed it up and car was running the same....clicking and bad power loss. the next day i started it to take it to a tech and it shut off, it wont crank, or anything, all the electrical system i checked and cleaned changed plugs wires, not the distributor, wondering if it could just be a bad distributor or something more serious.
Could be the timing belt? If it breaks it wont be an easy fix and it wont be cheap to have someone do it for you either. The good thing is that it CAN be fixed, unlike those Honda motors. The power loss issue makes me think that it is a timing belt issue. Hope this helps a bit...Good Luck!

I just purchased a one ton 1998 Chevy Express work van with a 5.7 liter engine and automatic transmission. The day I first took a look at the van it died while it had been idling fine. I was talking with the seller and noticed it quit while we were talking. As it took me a couple of months to gather the cash for the purchase the van sat. I actually had forgotten about the stall on that day because the van did run excellent and got a super deal on it and a complete carpet cleaning set up for only $3,300! Since I picked it up I have driven it problem free for 4 days of heavy carpet cleaning as well- the van's engine also powers the PTO driven Steam Genie carpet cleaner on board. It really is a strong engine with no exhaust fumes, coolant leaks, or oil burning whatsoever. So this morning I started the van and after idling for 5 minutes it suddenly died. I was able to restart it about 30 minutes later and go do my carpet job, but on the way home it died again. It cranks, but spraying starter fluid during the cranking it does nothing. It sounds like it wants to go, but now it won't restart beyond a couple of hesitations during cranking it, with or without starter fluid. On the way to the job I did today it did die on the highway, but fortunately restarted while coasting over to the slow lane. It's funny because after this I was able to do my carpet job with no problems until I headed back home when it finally quit again. This is where I've left off until I can drive back to where it is tomorrow. Thanks for any help. I figure I can start with checking for spark and the obvious. Are there any modules etc. that can be eliminated since it is a sporadic issue and not an all or nothing symptom?

I have a J reg automatic. The first time I drive it, its drives lovely. The second or third time i drive within the same day, it plays up. When ~i put it into reverse, it stalls almost straight away, and i have to keep my foot on the brake and accelerator and ease my way out, when I'm sat in traffic in "drive" it will not tick over enough and will stall!!!! Ive checked the transmission fluid and is fine. Please help... thanks Jo
