Question about 1998 Cadillac Catera
I have a 1998 Cadillac Catera with transmission problems. Last winter after driving it I pulled into the driveway I went to leave uremembered that I had forgotten something and when I put it into drive it would not move. I pushed it up and parked it until summer and then I checked the transmission fluid and it was only a little low. Just in case you didn't know, the transmission fluid can only be checked by taking out a plug out on the right side of the trasnmission and sticking your finger in the hole and if it is level with the hole it is at the right level, at least on the model I have. Anyway, I filled the transmission and tried driving it. Well it worked to a point both forward and reverse. It seems to work better in reverse but it's hard to tell because I don't drive 20 miles and hour in reverse. When driving in drive I reach about 20 mph and the transmission completely lets go. When I coast a short distance the transmission engages again and if I hold it at that speed I can make it around the block and into the drive. I do not know if there is an adjustment for the bands or not, I think that there is a transmission solenoid which I believe has something to do with the bands. Well anyway, what do you think? You have a fatal problem with the transmission that will require it be removed and a rebuilt installed. You either have worn out clutch pack plates or the system is losing hydraulic pressure due to hard and leaking seals (common on high mileage car and trucks) You can try having the unit flushed of all the old fluid and also putting in a can of LUCAS brand transmission conditioner to soften up and seal internal leaks, it may work, but the cost will be about $150
