Will not stay running at Idle


Clean your throttle body with throttle body cleaner, inside and out, and check your idle air control valve on the throttle body. That can be taken off and cleaned too. Be careful with it, it has a small motor called a stepper motor. It's how the engine computer controls the idle speed. The only air passage into the engine at idle (when the foot is off the gas pedal and the throttle plate is closed), is this air passage under the idle air control motor. The stepper motor allows it to control the amount of air, less for lower idle speed, more air for higher idle. See? Well, good idling.

On a dodge neon 2004 the code reads P0507 idle control system. Is that a sensor?


No, it's not a sensor. The engine computer controls idle speed by an "actuator" called an IAC -idle air control -motor or valve. It sits right on the throttle body where the air hose, the big boot, connects to the top of the engine. It controls the idle air passage-smaller air passages besides the larger throttle plate opening- according to computer command.
Probably your IAC motor or valve has a problem. A good cleaning often helps. Remove it and scrape off gently the deposits. Don't push the end piece, the pintle, back and forth, and don't spray cleaner up towards the little motor. Check the air passages where it mounts on the throttle body and clean as best you can. If it needed cleaning, take off the big boot and use a sensor safe cleaner, like throttle body cleaner, and old rags and old toothbrushes, and clean out the inside of the throttle body and the big butterfly valve, the throttle valve, inside. Note that when it is at rest, no gas pedal giving it gas, the throttle valve is almost completely closed. Those separate air passages in your idle control system, what the IAC motor controls, is the only way for the engine to get enough air to keep running. If they clog up, or the valve or motor doesn't work anymore, anyway the computer sees a wrong result from engine rpm sensors, and what it is commanding from the IAC motor, so it alerts you the problem is in the...in the idle cntrl system. Have at it, friend. It's either do it yourself or pay labor costs for a pro.

What Colorado do you have ? 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive ? Sport ,sport LS 3.5L , Z71, Z71 LS. etc. what size engine ? an does it have electronic throttle control ? I have factory service info an it is not showing that code .

In order to decrease idle speed, the PCM commands the throttle closed reducing air flow into the engine and the idle speed decreases. In order to increase idle speed, the PCM commands the throttle plate open allowing more air to pass the throttle plate. If the actual idle RPM does not match the desired idle RPM within a calibrated time, this DTC sets.

Where is sensor located that controls idle

The cars computer or PCM (powertrain control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the idle air control motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. An idle air control motor can fail one of two ways, either the motor short circuits and stops working or the motor will develop high resistance and cause the idle air control motor to react slowly, either failure can cause the engine to stall at idle. When a trouble code scan is performed it sometimes won't always detect a failed or weak idle air control motor.

check the air idle control valve , its located in the air tube that leads to the throttle body of your motor,, also, clean the throttle body with carb cleaner, just remove the air tube leading to the motor,, clean the part that it attaches to on the top of the motor, a few sprays will clean off all the black stuff that accumulates inside of it,, open the flap and clean around that too, wipe the excess out with a clean rag,

I have a 1996 Eclips 2litre when you get in and start it with your foot on fuel it works fine when you take your foot off it dies out.Also its only getting 5amp/volts witch ever it is to the fuel ,map...


I am not saying 100% this is your problem because this is a fairly expensive part however your symptoms are classic IAC failure. An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or PCM (powertrain control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the idle air control motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. An idle air control motor can fail one of two ways, either the motor short circuits and stops working or the motor will develop high resistance and cause the idle air control motor to react slowly, either failure can cause the engine to stall at idle. When a trouble code scan is performed it sometimes won't always detect a failed or weak idle air control motor. To check the idle air control motor remove the unit, with the wires connected turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine, the idle air control should move in or out. If the idle air control motor does nothing it has probably failed, replace it with a new unit and recheck system. Note: while the idle air control motor is removed clean (use aerosol carburetor cleaner) the passages the idle air control uses to control idle air speed, also inspect the idle air control for a build-up on the seating (pointed) end and clean as necessary.
