I had a similar problem the reverse gear works fine but when i shift to drive the transmission runs
as if its stuck on third.
My problem was a burnt fuse located in the interior fusebox

press the brakes down hard and leave it there for a while and keep pressing the gear button and eventually you'll be driving

Check the gear linkages for wear at all the joints and connections. Check for worn or missing rubber or nylon bushes or loose connector ends. Have someone hold the gear shift input into the box and move the gear lever, there should be minimal movement except in the neutral position and then only left to right.
