SOURCE: my 97 nissan pickup xe has a noise in engine sound

which engine do you have? a Haynes manual, can walk you through it.. it can be a difficult job if you have a overhead cam engine.. because of the timing chain.. that said depending on the engine millage you may want to replace it also

SOURCE: 97 nissan P/U XE 2.4L

why do you need to check them? are they ticking of clicking? or do you have a miss fire ?

there is no test for the lifters, all you can do is test the engine oil pressure, if the oil pressure is ok and the lifters are not pumping up then you will need to replace them, but make sure the noise you are hearing is the lifters and not the timing chain these trucks have a bad problem with the timing chain tensionors getting weak and the timing chain hitting the inside of the timing cover and rattles and it does sound like lifters.

good luck

let me know if there is any thing else you need.

Low oil pressure at low rpms

Depending on tone and depth of "clicking" it could be anything from lifters to connecting rods or piston pins....

cheapest to expensive:

Replace oil filter

if that doesn't do it (which it doesn't sound like it),

Replace engine...

Because clicking/ticking/clunking noises while having a "low oil pressure" issue (most of the time) means the engine is destroying itself.

1997 nissan pickup 4wd, just had timing chain replaced , now have noticeable knocking noise coming from valve cover ? mechanic says need new stack shims on valve rockers ?

Not likely. You have a 4 cyl engine with over head cam. It has hydrolic lifters. If it wasn't making the noise before he replaced the chain, then its something he did...or didn't do. If it was making the noise before, most common reason would be 1 or more lifters not pumping up. If you have a six cyl, no one changed the timing chain, (It doesn't have one!) The 3.0 6cyl has a belt.
