Overdrive is for highspeeds under light loads to consume less gas. so if you want good gas mileadge and not doing hills on freeway and dont have lots of weight in the car, then go for it.

Toyota harrier 98 model (OD off )check light on/off. Why?OD means over drive?

There should be a small pushbutton switch on your shifter, either on the center of the knob if it has the shifter on the steering wheel or if its on the center console, it should be to the side of the release button that you press when switching from park to drive. It means Over Drive is off and that will not allow to engage the last gear when driving. This is useful when hauling a heavy trailer but not good when driving normally cause it may cost you more fuel economy

Tyring to understand the od off light when i push the switch it lights up on dash and push it again it goes off should it not be lit up on dash under normal driving conditions

THE OD LIGHT SHOULD ONLY BE LIT UP WHEN THE OD IS TURNED OFF LIKE WHEN YOUR TOWING. WHEN TOWING YOU DONT WANT THE OD ON .PUTS TOO MUCH STRESS ON TRANS. UNDER NORMAL OPPERATION THE LIGHT SHOULD BE OFF...

My OD off Light came on what does it mean?

it means your vehicle automatic transmission has less power and it has less fuel consumption..you turn it on when you need a maximum power of the transmission.OD off is only advisable for short distance driving, but if you are going to travel on off & rough roads the "OD off" switch will turn on.The light goes off by then.

Transmission overdrive failure

Good chance there is a problem with the wiring to the OD solenoid or the OD solenoid itself. The solenoid is located at the top of the tranny, on driver side. Unplug the solenoid and put + 12-volt to it, if you hear it click in and out give it a test drive with your rigged wiring, if she goes in to OD then you know the tranny / solenoid are good but problem with OD relay, switch or heat sensor. Push come to shove you can just rewire it to a new switch and be done with it (that's what I ended up doing)

Please let me know if this assisted you.

Thanks,
Tom

What does the overdrive on off switch do? If I don't have it on my 1989 mitsubishi galant winds out in third and wont go to fourth

The overdrive switch allows you to manually keep the transmission from going in to OD. This can be usefull when driving up steep grades and the transmission has to continually down shift for better engine torgue. Also very useful when towing a trailer to keep the engine RPMs up for better towing ability. The transmissions on the cars also use a temperature switch, here in WI the car (with Mitsubishis) will not shift in to OD until the engine meets a given temp. If your temp switch has failed the tranny cannot go in to OD, there should be a OD relay too which should be inspected and lastly the OD solenoid which engages the OD, if it failed no go. Also be certain to keep your tranny oil in top form with the Mitsubishi's, their trans-axels are quite sentitive to failing tranny fluid (poor viscocity) if the fluid is old/dirty good practice to go ahead and replace it with filter.

I hope this may have assited you,
Tom

I have a mitsubishi express 1990 2.5l diesel auto it wont go into 4th(over drive) what is the problem or if a petrol transmission will fit

The mitsuishi products of this era use a temperature switch that allowed the engine to switch to overdrive (ie the engine had to be a min. heat for tranny to go in to OD) This sensor may have failed or the relay it goes to... possible open wire to OD switch too. To check the OD solenoid you can place a positive wire lead to it, you'll hear a slight click, this will be the solenoid energizing. If you hear it you know the solenoid is good andthe failure lies with another component. If push comes to shove you can wire in another OD switch and have it receive power from the fuse box (power when key is on only) the OD solenoid would always be energized when the engine is running unless you turn off the switch yourself.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Over drive

if you have an OD switch, then when the light is off the OD is dis-engaged, also at hiway speed if you turn off the OD u will feel the car slow and engine speed/RPM increase about 800-1000 RPM

Hyundai Overdrive wont engage

It is not suggested strip and twist wires. Better take it to an authorized service station to check what causes the problem. Is it OVERDRIVE SWITCH or CRUISE CONTROL MODULE faulty?
Over drive switch has three points. (5 to 4 selects "ON" or 5 to 6 selects "OFF").
Right click on following schematic, "save picture as" to a location in your PC so you have a ZOOM IN view.
