SOURCE: 1989 ford escort cabriolet gearbox oil

is it manual tranny? if so u do so under the car by removing the fill up plug which is located on the side of the tranny on driver side of the car if i remember. The plug under the tranny is to drain it.

If u drain it, when u fill it back up, u do so until oil slightly spills out by way of that side plug.

SOURCE: how do you reset the oil life monitor on a 2008

You will have a bit of old oil left in the system if you just drain it and change the oil filter. My guess it is a 5qrt system so 10% would account for 1/2 qrt. May not seem like a lot but your crankshaft, valve train and pan can hold residual oil that may account for your 10%, also sludge and other deposits too. Now the way you actually change oil, at a dealership or higher end service stations, they use a cycling system to send in fresh oil through the car and pump out the old. Once the color changes or my guess the computer on the device says the oil is completely clean then all the residue is gone and everything is good and the light will go off. This is wonderful since it removes sludge and all sorts of gunk out of the engine.

2009 focus gearbox oil level plug

Depends on whether you have manual or automatic transmission. Here is a link to a pdf of your owners manual. See page 223 and pages 247 on for your question. Basically, if it's automatic, you have a dipstick, the location is shown. If manual it is a fairly large bolt on the side of the gearbox, you take it out and stick your finger in. It should be even with the bottom of the filler hole. These don't use fluid, but have service intervals to change it. See manual.

My ford focus is leaking oil think it might be gearbox oil,

Is the oil you see reasonably clean or is it black. The gearbox oil would be cleaner than the engine oil. Gearbox leaks would most likely come from one of the following:-
  1. Drive shafts
  2. Gear change lever inputs,
  3. Speedo cable
  4. Reverse light switch
  5. Drain plug
  6. Input shaft seal (inside the bell housing).
Pig a piece of paper under the car when you park it at night to give you an idea where the drip is located and inspect the area above that position
