the trans has to come out first, this is not a job for Backyard Bob. It a major job, an dthere more to it. The engines are famous for it. take it to a place that has done a lot of these before.

you have to reseal the oil pan, the oil pan is a 2 piece upper and lower pan. the engine or trans mission has to0 be rtemoved to remove the oil pan per general motors there is new sealer available also the front and rear crankshaft seals should be replaced (need special tools to replace seals)

Thi is a major task. Recommend you go to a public library an check out a Haynes manual and read up on this task and you will see what I mean
