Can a power steering gearbox be repaired

I was told my power steering gearbox has an active leak and will cost over $800 to fix. Can I repair this myself without a hoist?

In most cases yes but it is most likely to cost more to rebuild then it is to get a new one

What is recommended repair for power steering leak?

That problem does pose a fire risk. Power steering fluid is light weight oil. If the oil spreads to the manifold for the exhaust it can catch fire. IT is not clear where the leak is from what you have posted but the cost that you were quoted is way too high. A pump is not that expensive and neither are the hoses or the labor to work on them. The moving parts on the steering axle could be that expensive and rebuilding or replacing them can be costly.

What is power steering and how much to fix it

Power steering the mechanical/Hydraulic assist to make the cars steering wheel turn easily by using a hydraulic pressure pump to activate a valve that helps to push the wheel in the direction you desire to turn. As far as cost to repair, it varies by what particular part of the Power Steering is defective, in most cases that is the part called the steering rack, and that's about $1000. to replace and re-align the front end after the repair.

I have a oil leak in my Cadillac 2007 DTS. It drops "1%" oil life according to the dash appx every week. Jiffy Lube mechanics told me it needs immediate attention but they don't fix leaks. I didn't want...

First thing to do is determine where the leak is from and then you will be able to determine your cost. It is not that hard of issue to repair as long as you can get to it to repair.

My power steering fluid is leaking. The cars first owner told me that he used to put some leak stop and it worked for 1 month. But I want to fix this problem for good. Help me out please.

There can be many causes for a power steering leak, from loose hose clamps to failed seals inside the steering rack. The whole area needs to be cleaned down thoroughly and the leak source found and whatever the required repair is carried out from there. A power steering specialist is probably your best bet for speed and cost of repair, but you are best to get a few estimates around town and choose the shop that appeared the most helpful and friendly, not necessarily the cheapest.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

2004 BMW 525i Active Steering problem

The Active Steering system uses a Papst brushless dc motor to rotate the cage (ring gear) containing the planet gears a planetary gearbox at the bottom of the steering column. The motor effectively changes the steering ratio by increasing or decreasing the amount of gearbox output rotation relative to changes in the steering-wheel angle input. The resulting ratio depends on the speed of the car. For instance, a low 10:1 ratio gives high maneuverability for parking in tight spaces, with less than two turns of the steering wheel, lock to lock. To track straight at highway speeds, where even a small steering input can produce a quick sideways acceleration, the electric drive boosts the ratio to 20:1. Cars without Active Steering typically have ratios halfway between (specifically 14.1:1 for the BMW).
....
Now, if your active steering does not work , the car reverses back to power steering and the ratio is 15.1:1 so the car can be driven but the "active steering " is not working and still needs to be fixed.
It the unit needs to be replaced and your car is not under warranty, the repair cost may reach 5000 dollars.

Power steering leakage includes fuel line leakage...costly repair???

It will not cost all that Much to Repair these yourself. The Power Steering line is a Preassure Line though So, You need to be Extra Careful and Pay attention when Changing it. The rest is Pretty much Common Sense and can be Fixed by ANY Shade Tree Mechanic!
