Question about 2005 Pontiac Grand Am

Open Question

2005 Grand am Coolant Problem

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand am, my temperature gauge keeps jumping into the red line and if it stays there for too long it sends a signal to the cars computer and basically makes me pull over(im unable to accelerate until the gauge goes out of the red), ive replaced the water pump(im unsure about the belt being replaced though), thermostat and head gasket. Ive filled my coolant levels n bleed my coolant line, it will run good for a few days to a week then starts to red line. Can anyone help me please?

Some are located near the thermostat. Other are in the head. Go to your local parts store and look in the HAtes Manual. Most of them have one opened. It will tell you the exact location

SOURCE: 1999 Pontiac Grand Am Overheating

It is probably the problem. To make shure that need to change the gaskets, one of the symptoms use to be thet the temp rises when you are running at speed 50+ average, where is supposed that the car gets a lot of air due by the speed and nobody thinks that will be overheated.

SOURCE: where is the coolant sensor located for a pontiac grand am gt

There are 2 coolant sensors, one to control the radiator fan, and one to tell your computer how hot the engine is. They are both mounted in the engine, not far from where the upper radiator hose attaches, and where your thermostat is.

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Mini Cooper temperature gauge goes to red zone when idle

check coolant level could be too low allowing air in the cooling system causing air pocket in engine around the engine coolant sensor.coolant sensor needs to be in hot coolant so it will cause the cooling fan to come on at a set temperature.make sure coolant correct level and the coolant level in the cooling overflow jug should be at full cold mark.the cooling overflow jug should never be empty,if you see empty cooling overflow jug air got in the cooling system so make sure when engine cold every time raise hood make sure cooling overflow jug coolant level at full cold mark.if jug stay empty you have cooling leak.so replace radiator cap,if coolant level all good,i would replace the engine coolant temperature and thermostat.when your car come to a long stop or driving along long line of slow moving traffic the engine coolant blower motor should running if not have vechicle code scan for faulty coolant fan motor control module.or ecm problems.

Engine cooling fans dont come on until temp. gauge is almost red-lined. Already changed fan controled temp. sensor.

Perhaps your gauge is faulty. Is your coolant filled up? You may also have a vapour lock causing the problem. Also you may have to change your thermostat. It may be sticking. Good luck!

Hello! This is actually a pretty common issue on the '04's - and I've had it myself. There was a TSB put out about it, in fact. Here is the info from the TSB:

Subject: Speedometer Erratic Movement, Fuel Gauge Does Not Go to Full After FIlling, Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Reads Hot and Coolant Temperature Light Illuminates (Reprogram IPC) #05-08-49-003A - (04/18/2005)

Models: 2004 Pontiac GTO Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 4L296011
Condition Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:
• Speedometer jumps erratically. Gauge may go up to 200 MPH or not return to zero. • Fuel gauge does not move off empty when tank is full. • Engine coolant temperature gauge reads hot and coolant temperature light illuminates. These conditions may be intermittent.
Correction Technicians are to reprogram the IPC with an updated software calibration. This new service calibration was released with TIS satellite data update version 1.0 available January 10, 2005. As always, make sure your Tech 2® is updated with the latest software version.
Important: Vehicles built after the VIN breakpoint must have the IPC replaced to correct these conditions.

hello, the first things to check are the coolant level make sure you have coolant to the full mark with your car not running, it sounds like you have a bad thermostat most common thing to go out in the cooling system.
