Question about 1998 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Transmission When I'm driving my van, it revs for no reason. I will be driving 80km and the RPMs just go up. I took it to a mechanic who put it on the computer and the code said TCC Error. He explained what it meant, but he doesn't work on transmissions, so he said it may be able to be fixed externally but not sure. I would need to find someone who knew transmissions. If it can't be done externally then has to be tore apart and fixed inside, So if anyone has any help for me it would be appreciated. I just bought it a week ago.

Does the driving on overdrive mode cause high fuel consumption, because the transmission use the first three ratios mostly?

driving in over drive mode actually is what gives the economy as the engine rpms will be around 300 less than direct drive . Lower rpms = fuel savings
OD should come in around 60 klm/hr and drop out at around 50 klm/hr. When you are accelerating hold the pedal in a set position and watch the rev counter (rpms ) and each gear change you will see the rpms drop and then build back up as the vehicle speed increases At 100klm/hr the revs should be around 3200 rpms or less but if over ( say 3500 rpms) then may be the OD is not coming in. One way to test a box operation is to find a speed shop with a dynomometer and test the gear selections against loads and engine rpms

Hate to say it, but, it's probably the transmission. Common issue with your year model Honda. After replacing, adding an aftermarket transmission cooler tends to prolong/offset the problem.

You have internal transmission damage I expect the clutches on third and fourth gear are wiped out. Its either that or a solenoid gone bad that holds those clutches pressure get it in a transmission shop soon to avoid whole transmission replacement costs.

Put car in reverse and it won't go. Put it into drive and still won't go. Rev car in reverse and finally will back up. Same when put into drive, rev car and it will finally go. Help

Tom it could be that the transmission fluid is low. Sometimes these are safety mechanisms to keep from burning out the transmission. Check the transmission level to make sure it is at the appropiate level. If it does not work after that it could be transmission issue.

My 1992 honda revs up to 6000 rpms when I am driving about 70 and will not shift. Then it will shift and go down to 3000 once it shifts, then it will shoot back up to 6000 for no reason what the heck is...

When a vehicle have to achive a high RPM to shift this is a sign that the transmission is having a problem and not shifting properly, is it starting at 2nd or 3rd gear, can you tell? I recently had a transmission and the 2nd gear was bad, once the Mechanic broke down the transmission the whole thing needed rebuilding, so you may want to take it to a shop, and make sure the Test drive, and diagnostic check will be free if the repairs are done by the same shop, otherwise you will have to pay if you decide to go somewhere else.
