SOURCE: 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 Transmission problem

This started happening on my 05, 3.7L at around 45K miles. Usually once every two months, then I would shut off and back on and everything would be fine... Happened last week and I took to a private mechanic... Private mechanic said TCM needed to be flashed, and maybe replaced... Dealer said it would need to be replaced (of course)...I just got back from Dealer and it was covered under Powertrain warranty (only to 70K), but still cost $500 to replace the circuit board under the shifter... I dont think it shouldve cost that much, but I followed their advice so it hopefully wont happen again... Third jeep, each successsive one (each newer than the last) has more and more problems... Its sad that this will be my last jeep product...

SOURCE: 1998 Volvo V70 with potential transmission problems?

Yes, it's the 'pnp' switch (also known as the inhibitor switch) which is on the side of the transmission.

I own 2 Volvo 960s (3 litre automatics) which are similar in many respects ... and have that flashing arrow. It's a well known fault and you don't have much to worry about.

Rather than write it all here, you can read what I wrote as an ebay guide about it at http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-960-Automatic_W0QQugidZ10000000003233806

I did put similar info on my website at http://www.glennsmart.btinternet.co.uk/volvo960.html with photos

Though the ebay guide is better ...

If you haven't got time to read it ... forget the flashing arrow and put a bit of black tape over it ... My wife's car has (192,000 miles) had that arrow flashing for 3 years. My car (100,000 miles) has had that flashing arrow since I bought it 1 year ago.

I did change the pnp on both cars ... but you also need to have the computer error reset by Volvo to have the light extinguished. Don't worry ... keep driving.

SOURCE: transmission problem, i think?

sounds like a sensor issue on your transmission. it is going into failsafe mode for some reason because the computer is not receiving an input that it should. there may be a loose wiring connection on the tranny. the first thing i would do is check for loose wires. after that you may need one of several sensors. if the car works fine when this message does not appear i would not think the transmission itself is bad.

P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Article by Dale Toalston ASE Certified Technician Transmission Control System TCS Malfunction What does that mean? Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory. This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM's memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0700 DTC may include: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination The transmission may exhibit drivability problems like slipping, etc. Causes More often then not, the cause of this code is that there is a transmission problem of some kind. The TCM detected the problem and set a code. P0700 means that a fault code is stored in the TCM. However this doesn't rule out the possibility of a failed PCM or TCM (unlikely). Possible Solutions For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself. VW Jetta 2004 wont shift gears after running fine for some time

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

Fault P0700 indicates TCM Faulty or Transmission Failure?

It means either, what it means is this, the Transmission Control module (TCM) has requested the Powertrain control module (PCM) to turn on the check engine light because the TCM has detected a ****** fualt is present, this can be any of a bout 20 problems, that is all it means. What must be done now is to have the TCM scanned for the fault code(s) that alerted the PCM to turn on the CEL.

Transmission when i accellerate it goes into 2nd gear and will not go back into drive untill i turn the engine off and restart

The auto governor or the settings in the gear box seems to be faulty as it fails to move the selector. Make sure that the transmission fluids were changed , and that there is no grinding noise. If there is any alignment issue with the selector , it must be reset after checking for PLAY.
If the fault seems to be consistent then the transmission gear box must be removed and checked before it can cause more damage.

could be a good move to have the transmission oil changed
next move is to have the fault codes read to determine the sensors at fault
new transmission --no --from your description , you never mentioned any strange noises so it will not be necessary to go that path
It will be electronic problems not mechanical
take it to an accredited professional transmission shop , have the codes read and get a proper diagnosis done

These assorted problems usually come from the control modules, in this case the transmission control module (TCM)
First, reset al ECM' by removing the battery negative terminal for a minute or so then re-fit it. This reset should cure all your problems. If not I shall consult my TSB's after you post the results of the reset.

Hello there, One of the problems Jeeps do have is Transmissions. It is very typical of the sensors and solonoid packs to go bad, Also Jeeps as well have well know problems with the computer causing transmission issues as well.

I suggest taking it to a shop other than a parts store they are great for basic info but a repair shop can actually look at what each sensor is doing in real time.

You are on the right track and I would most definetly address this asap rather than causing internal transmission problems.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

seems to be like you might have a transmission problem possible with the lock up solenoid system,
try to pull codes and see if you get any codes from the car with a scan tool,
some transmission codes will not turn the light on.
