Surging idle is usually caused by vacuum leaks. Ford 5.4L engines are notorious for the PCV hose elbow leaking back behind the throttle body.

The PCV tube goes from the right (passenger) side valve cover and loops around behind the valve body. Inspect this hose on BOTH ends.

Low Idle drops oil pressure

Raising the idle would only put undue wear on the transmission shortening it's life. If pressure is low, you may need to replace a worn oil pump. Or depending on the mileage and maintenance, you may need to rebuild the engine. I am driving a 97 5.2l with full tow package with 216,000 miles on it, and I service it faithfully. It still does't smoke or use oil. The pressure does drop to about 20 when idling ( On the dash gauge, who knows how accurate it is ) then goes up to 40 when accelerated to start out. Sounds to me that your problem may be oil pump. FYI if you have very bad gas mileage, I have found a trick that will increase it. replace the stock fuel injectors with 5 hole pontiff injectors from early 90's neons. They are a perfect fit & increased my mileage 25% +. Good luck

I have a 1993 talon n/t that is now turbo. i rebuilt the head and now i have a weird idle problem, it will drop to 750-800 and just jump up to 1100-1200 and stay for a few seconds and then drop down again....

sounds like either a battery to body , engine to fuel management wiring, or battery to engine GROUND problem #2 a vacuum leak and a loose alt belt also make sure the throttle cable is not to tight !!!

Surges in RPM while at idle

It may be one of two things. A intermittent problem with the idle air control sensor or the throttle position sensor. Have the cars computer scanned at a local auto parts store to see if there is a pending code that has yet to turn on the check engine light.

Try adjusting your air/fuel mixture screws. Turn them all the way in and turn them back out 1 and a half turns. This will base line you. Double check for vacuum leaks at the carb. and intake. Spray some WD 40 along the intake where it meets the heads and see if your engine idle changes. If it does, replace you intake gaskets with a good set. Replace carb. mounting gasket. Check for any unplugged vacuum ports. Once you're able to idle it down to 1000 rpm's, turn your mixture screws in until the engine stumbles and turn screws back out until the engine achieves the highest rpm and turn in again only at a 40 rpm drop.
