SOURCE: Neutral with a dead battery

There is an override lever on the shift lever, inside the center console. Find the access panel next to the driver's seat; it's about 1.5" high by 4.25" wide, under the top edge accent trim. Carefully pry out the panel, then use a screwdriver to push the white plastic override up toward the roof of the vehicle. You can then move the shift lever out of Park.

SOURCE: 1998 lincoln navigator won't go in park. still

Sounds like you either broke your inhibitor switch, or possibly damaged your parking pawl in the transmission.

Return to the dealership.

How do I put my Lincoln navigator into reverse if my car won't start?

is the battery totally dead if it is you will not be able to take it out of park because you need electric power. if you have power then you should be able to move the shift selector if you hold on the brake and turn on the key. but if just want to move it u will need to put in neutral.

Can't Shift To Neutral with a Dead Battery

I am not sure about the Impala but the SAAB (also made by GM) has a small slot near the shifter where you can insert your key or screw driver (something flat) to release it from park when the car cannot be powered up.

How do i put my honda fit in neutral? the battery is dead and i need to move it back so i can get it jumped. it will not go in neutral.

Pull down the lever on the left side of the steering wheel which will in turn lower the steering wheel, then open the cover on the top of the steering wheel, lift open slightly not all the way, then you will see a white lever, press down the break then gently push down the white lever to put the gear in neutral, make sure you put the gear in neutral, remember you have moved the cover from the original position. Hope it helps. God Bless.

Jump starting the battery may be all you need. If this vehicle was not in park when the battery went dead and when you got in to start it it was dead. You then probably put it into park trying to start it.
But the issue at this time is if it was in neutral when the battery went dead the you changing the selector to park may not actually have placed the transmission in park. With electronic gear selection it actually need power to the system to place the transmission in park.
Without it really being in park the key may move to the lock position.
A bit of quess work here but I hope for you I hit the mark.

No, the vehicle needs power in order to put the vehicle in gear. This is because of the brake switch needs to engage in order for the lever to move. The switch cannot engage without power.

Engine will not start, acts like dead battery

sounds like the neutral safety switch, check it for power on both wires, if no power when key is on and in park or neutral then there is ya problem. also just try putting it in neutral and try starting it, if that is the case then the switch just needs a little adjusting.
