Question about Nissan Sentra
Noticed that car heater was blowing cold air, then started overheating....put water in the radiator heater is blowing hot again but not sure if my water pump is going out or if my head gasket is about to give...what are some symptoms to tell me what's wrong with the car?
You have a leaking engine cylinder head gasket, this may be due to the previous overheat or a result of it, make sure when you have the engine repaired you find out if the cooling system is in good condition or the problem will recur.

SOURCE: blown head gasket
That would be a lot to type out on the computer.
My best advise would be to get a Chilton Manual at the autoparts store. It cost about $20. You'll get all the info you need plus pictures and diagrams. The Chilton book will be the best research material for the type of job you are going to do.

you didn't mention if your cooling fan is working check that.
also when a water pump fails you can usually see coolant coming from the weep hole. are you losing any coolant? if so it's either external which could be a loose or damaged hose or connection.
an internal coolant loss couild be a cracked or warped cylinder head or a bad head gasket.
check your oil to see if it looks like a milkshake when you pull the dipstick.
if you have run it hot for a period of time say long enough to limp it home and the temp got very hot then you could be looking at a cracked head or maybe even a cracked cylinder bore.
i hope your oil looks like oil and not a milkshake .
