It prevents the vehicle rolling back when stationary on a hill with the engine running. It also assists on slippery surfaces(ice, snow etc) by engaging 2nd gear instead of 1st on pullaway and then shifting only to 3rd.

What is the hold button for?

When working properly the hold button when pressed will hold the transmission from shifting gears until each gear is at the very top of the range. It is similiar to sport mode in other vehicles. It will allow for faster speeds during acceleration, but uses more fuel.

VW Passat 2006 service now

2 options depending on your displays .

Press and hold the service wrench button with the ignition off. While still holding the button, turn your ignition to "on" (but don't start the car). Press the Min clock button and then release the wrench button.

With key off press and hold the 0.0 button on the cluster. With your other hand turn the key to the on position , while still holding 0.0 button, press the minute button for 1 second and you will see the service reset.

cheers
