2003 mitsubishi eclipse timing belt broken symptoms

Hello all, I have a 2003 eclipse GS 102,*** miles. I was driving on the highway and pulled over to rest for 10 mins or so( I was tired) I left the car running to keep my son comfortable. About 5 mins into my rest the car shut off by its self. I tried to restart it but it wouldnt go. I waited 15 minutes and tried again. It tried to start but it wouldnt. i thought it may be bad fuel but I got it at the same place as I usually do. It made no noises or anything, it drove just fine until I stopped. I do the regualar checks and oil changes. Bought the car 2 yrs ago with 81,*** miles. I opened the oil cap and looked in while the wife tried to start it. Nothing moved(that I could see) and still wouldnt start. Any thoughts here? Timing belt broken? Bad fuel pump? Jason

Its quite possible that the timing belt broke. if broke the camshaft will not turn, and therefore no start of engine.

SOURCE: car dies going down highway hard to start

assuming the starter is good and the engine turn over fine but will not fire or run. when the car die, check why is it so hard to start. check if you getting sparks and fuel, no sparks check coil and wires, and if both are good than the cam sensor is bad, no fuel, check the fuel pump, pump good check the crank sensor.

Daughter has a 2004 mitsubishi eclipse gs with 30,000 miles. Mechanic recommends replacing timing belt now but book recommends at 60,000. Why now?

You don't need to. Is he trying to drum up service? The only reason to change belt at 30,000 is if you have to take it off for another work, like the water pump, something like that. Then you might as well replace belt, since it is already off. But just to change belt because it hit 30,000? No, no way.

How often do timing belt need to be changed

Some belts require replacement at 60,000 miles, while others could be at 40,000 or more than 60,000. It is generally a good idea to replace the timing belt at least 60,000 miles.

1995 eclipse GS that just stops running then 30 minutes starts right back up.

I would look at the ignition module. This is a classic condition of failure, does this occur after the car gets warm? If so that is ignition module symptoms, the circuitry overheats causing immediate shutdown and works as normal after it has cooled.

2003 Mitsibushis Eclipse GS won't start?

If the timing belt is broken, chances are you would hear the pistons banging into the open valves as the engine turned over (broken timing belt means cam is not turning, and some valves will be open.).

Please reply what led up to the engine not starting, from the last time that the engine ran.
