janice, sorry to say but yes the panel has to come off and if it's your first time be carefull you can damage the panel. it has clips holding it on on the sides and vbottom, no big deal just pull in a short **** and it will snap loose, a couple of the plastic clips will break for sure, no big deal, local parts store will have them on hand for sure, once all are loose the panel will slide "up" over the top of door frame. with a few elec connectors to dis connect the panel will be out of your way. you can either replace the handle itself or the whole assembly. if you want the chrome handle is 80 bucks, if you decide 16 bucks for a gray one will do just as good go for it. and they will have to order the chrome and have the gray one in stock. hope this helps, and it's fairly difficult to just replace the handle with the spring being a ****** sometimes, and the assy you will need a drill and rivit gun to replace it. hope this helps!!!
