I,m going to try insulating the solenoid first , as removal of a starter from a disco is a nightmare, but thanks for the tip

I own a 1996 Discovery Tdi 300.So far I never encounter overheating problems until 8.11.08 whilst travelling from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan over mountainous road. After having travelled more than130 kilometers the expansions tank cover just popped out and hot water gushed out.Engine cannot restar until the engine cooled down despite filling water into the expansion tank. Please note small amount ofm water enter the exoansion tank. I believed that watrer entered into the radiator only with engine running. Engine started after 3 hrs but with heavy smoked. Smoke disappeared on the second start and engine realled in the cool sector of the engine heat meter.

My problem has been solved it was the starter or ignition wire, I ended up removing the starter motor and stripping it down and servicing it and replacing and insulating the ignition wire, it works fine now.

cheers JFA1 thanks for the tip.

Not so, sounds like a lazy mechanic. Usually, when they shut down hot and start again cool or after some time it is a sign of a bad crankshaft position sensor. Had that same problem on a '95 park avenue. Very frustrating, but an easy fix. The sensor can be tested, but it can sometimes be misleading. Usually the computer will store a code for this problem, but not always. Best to see if there are stored codes in the computer before replacing a bunch of parts. Check for codes and reply, maybe we can pinpoint the issue.
Thanks. Mike

I have a 1995 4runner automatic, 3vze(?)v6 engine. About two years ago I had to have the head gasket replaced($2700.00). It was done in the spring, so I didn't use the heater until the fall and found I had...

The jiggle valve is just to assist in ensuring no air trapped behind the thermostat. It is important but only really at the bleeding air out stage. When it gets hot, throw the heater on,it should get hot and the temperature will come down or stabilise.I would recommend removing the radiator and having the top tank removed and the core tubes cleaned thoroughly. Refit it and ensure that you fill it slowly to allow air to escape.Use a good quality coolant too.Get back with your findings if fix still needed and I will endeavor to pinpoint repair needed.

Seems heat related so first thing to change would be the coolant sensor in the thermostat housing. This tells the ECU whether the engine is hot or cold. If faulty after 10 - 15 minutes it could over fuel and cut the engine not allowing it to start until it has cooled back down.

Car stalls in the middle of driving it

Is the temp guage reading high or are you just suspecting it needs to cool down? Could be thermastat bad or possible water temp sensor bad. Maybe water pump. After next time you run the car for awhile carefully touch the radiator cap and should be hot, if not then coolant is not circulating.

Difficult to start again after warm up engine.

give the engine a minute or two to cool down before turning it off. This cool down period allows oil to circulate and cool down the bearings in the turbo. If you shut off the engine immediately after hard driving, the oil can gum up around the hot bearings and create problems down the road.
Hope this helps

Possibly ignition coil,or crank sensor, however it a process of elimination when it wont start. difficult to say online because there are many things that can cause this problem. I would start by seeing if it has a spark at the plugs. Remove plug lead, get another plug of and push it into the lead. earth the threads of the plug to the engine and crank it. if there is no spark then you have to go further down that avenue. i fyou do have spark then your looking at fuel possibly.

I had the same problem a few years ago. The problem was a cracked coil. The unit would expand and separate when the car got hot and it took a while to cool off and reconnect.
