Question about 1999 Mercury Villager

Check engine light on

My check engine light has been on for almost a year, the reading states it is the 02 sensor, bank one sensor two. The front and rear 02 sensors have both been replaced.

Hi, I've had a similar problem and found that the sensor was carboned over because I was driving for economy. I took the vehicle and accelerated at full throttle from 30 to 65 three times and the light went out and has not come back on with normal driving.

Can an O2 oxygen sensor effect another sensor and give a false reading?


Check which side of your engine has cylinder #1. That side is bank 1. Bank 2 is the side opposite of bank 1. So bank 2 is not always passenger side. And since you seem to have extra O2 sensors, I would replace the other upstream and see what happens. Also the mass air sensor can give a trouble code issue to the upstream 02 sensors. Good luck. I've struggled thru this myself.

cars have engines, and engines are option, none stated.
cars have 2 to 4 or more 02 sensors.
my guess is you have a DTC error and failed to post it, making any answer wrong (or a wild guess)
why do that?
let me now make you expert on numbers, this is all covered in the FSM.if you so choose to read it.

now the cheat sheet.
Bank 1 and bank 2,
bank 1 is where the #1 cylinder resides.
#1 where is number 1?, well, it's the most close to the engine
main crank pulley, or cam chain or cam drive bet end of engine.
on "V" engines it can be on either bank, side.
but on all V engines, one Cylinder is most forward, and THAT is #1
these are all standards, SAE.org , ASE, and ISO. (europe)

B1S1, would be the Bank 1, front 02 sensor. (runs AFR)
B1S2 is the rear of CAT sensor. ( only for smog)
cars come with many engine options, you never stated yours.

is this a suzuki or a toyota? or a frenza that is really a POS Daewoo?
wow ! no car even stated only a maker, Suzuki. ouch.
and worse ,no year, ouch.

P1 means mfg code.
1135 is oxygen sensors reading wrong, (they can be good)
what engine? suzuki has 56 engines.
the engines have 2 to 4 oxygen sensors.
best i can tell its the 02 heater is bad(wires cut?)
best i can tell it is B1S1 (left bank front sensor) bank 1 sensor 1.?
post car make, car brand model and engine?
and for sure displacment or at least the number of cylinders.
i can then post the full FSM spec, on 1135s

Ok this is either a shorted wire or bad connector or just plain a bad 02 sensor or a stuck injector or bad PCV needs cleaned. You stated it runs great i would go with Bad 02 sensor first or check for possible exhaust leak and last check for bad converter.

2004 Toyota Camry - Check engine light has been coming on intermittently for a year. When reading the codes it states Knock Sensor and O2 Sensor Bank 1. The car is very sluggish when the light comes on....


I would tend to say the knock sensor is a result of the 02 sensor, because if it is not reading correctly it could be reporting the engine is running to rich, there for leaning out the air fuel mixture resulting in knocking which is then picked up by the knock sensor. I would start by replacing the O2 sensor in bank 1.

Maximas with the VE30DE and VQ30DE engines use a distributorless ignition system that is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM receives a signal from the crankshaft sensor (the CPS - Crankshaft Position Sensor), and processes the signal based on inputs
from other various engine sensors, including the Oxygen sensor.
(this is the role of the O2 sensor in ECM operation).
Then the ECM sends signals to each of the individual coils in the proper firing order.
This system is more efficient than a distributor, and has fewer moving parts. The high voltage coils are directly attached to each spark plug, allowing a higher energy spark within the cylinder. A high energy spark means a faster, more thorough burning of the air/fuel mixture, which produces more power and lower emissions.


SECONDARY SPARK TEST - works for all cars, including Maxima.


1. Remove the spark plug.

2. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil/coil pack, then attach the coil wiring.

3. Ground the plug at a good ground location on the engine.

4. Crank the engine and check for spark.

5. If spark occurs, the ignition system is functioning properly.

6. If no spark exists, test the ignition coil/coil pack, power transistor and related wiring.

HEI Ignition Spark test - works for all cars, including Maxima.

The next level test you may want to try is a HEI (high energy ignition) spark tester kit. Cost is
about $30 at most auto parts stores. Harbor Freight Tools sells a chinese equivalent for about $16.
Place the spark tester on each of the spark plugs, and watch as the little light in the tester will
light up each time the spark plug is fired by the computer. You can actually see weak or
intermittent sparking as the motor runs - you can tell by the relative strength of the light as
you compare the intensity and duration of the light across all 6 cylinders.

If your problem were the alternator (or its built-in voltage regulator), your battery would not be
getting a proper charge, and you
wouldn't be able to start the car after a drive, since the battery would have been drained during the
drive - normally, the alternator will both charge the battery and run all electrical
features of the car during a drive.

To test your alternator, place your DMM (digital multimeter) across the battery terminals while the
car is running - it should read 13.5VDC to 14.5VDC. With the car off, you can test your battery
voltage with the same DMM - it should read 12.65 VDC (for a fully charged battery).

Alternatively, you can take your car to Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, or Pep Boys, and they'll
attach their "charging system tester" to your car and give your car a nice test for free.
I do this with my customers' cars just to get that nifty printout of the problem. Its nice
to show a vehicle owner somethng in black & white when I'm recommending a new charging
or ignition system component (some of which can be a bit pricey).

Replace the cat you have ran it for years with a bad 02 sensor so now replace it and you will get better performance and better gas miliage. Never run a check engine light fo a long time it's telling you something is wrong. youer lucky you did not destroy the engine.
