Vacuum hoses Hoses have been removed under the throttle body, so I'm looking for a diagram to replace them in the correct places.

I have a 1970 Corvette, and a 1976 Corvette. I restore and customize Corvettes.

So you're getting ready to do the Fun(?) stuff, huh? Yes sir, nothing will make your day more than replacing your vacuum hoses for the headlamps.

I'm going to detail the hoses out, and the parts they connect to. Then I'm going to give you a link, that I feel will show the headlight vacuum diagram in great detail, plus a few tricks from me.

Let's start with the hose that comes from the intake manifold. The main supply of vacuum. It comes from the rear of the intake, and goes over to a Vacuum Filter. The vacuum filter is an item to replace, as it's a possible source for a vacuum leak, and prevents contaminating particles from entering your engine.
From the vacuum filter there is a hose to a Check Valve. (Another item to replace) The check valve then splits into two fittings. Two hoses come off of it. One hose leads into the firewall, and comes up under the dash. It connects to the light switch. The light switch has two fittings on it. One towards the pull knob, one towards the end of the light switch. This hose connects to the fitting at the end of the light switch.

The fitting on the light switch towards the pull knob, has a hose that comes off, and goes to the Pull Down Switch. (Manual Override Pull Down Switch) The little plastic knob you pull to keep the headlights up, or push in, so they the headlights will close when the headlights are turned off.

The other hose that comes off of the Pull Down switch, goes along the left fender well, and ends at the front of the car. It fits into a plastic 'Tee'. The Tee has two hoses coming off of it. One hose goes to the Left headlight Relay Valve. The other hose goes to the Right headlight Relay Valve.

From here the hoses are color coded. You may not be able to see this color code anymore. The color code of these hoses, is Red, Yellow, and Green.

On the Relay Valve it has a vacuum diaphragm chamber. This chamber looks like two pie pans put together. There are three fittings on the Relay Valve body. There is a fitting on the chamber itself. The hose coming from the Tee I described above, goes to the chamber fitting. The other hose coming from the Tee, goes to the other Relay Valve chamber. Doesn't matter which hose from the Tee, goes to what Relay Valve chamber. But when you look at it, you'll know how to lay those hoses out. You don't want then twisted over each other.

The fitting on the Relay Valve that is on the body of the valve, and nearest the chamber, is Red in color. It has a hose that goes to the back of the Actuator. The 90 degree bent metal tube. The actuator looks like two pie pans put together, too. The Actuator has a rod that comes out of the middle of it, and is what actually moves the headlight.

At the end of the Relay Valve body is a fitting. The one furthest away from the chamber. It has a Green hose coming from it. This hose goes to the Actuator on the other side. It connects to a straight fitting, in the middle of the actuator. This is the same for the other side.

The fitting in the middle of the Relay Valve body, has a Yellow hose coming from it. It goes to that long cylindrical tank in the front of the car. At each end of this tank are the bumper brackets.
This hose connects to a fitting at the end of the cylindrical tank. The cylindrical tank is the Vacuum Reservoir. Same thing for the other side.

The last hose is where we left off at the Check Valve. One hose went to the headlight switch. The other hose runs along the fender well, and connects to the Vacuum Reservoir. The long cylindrical tank up front.

Tricks:
1.With vacuum built up, press the rubber seal that's on the shaft (Rod) coming out of the Actuator. If you hear a vacuum leak, the seal is bad. This seal can be replaced without having to replace the Actuator. It isn't easy, but it isn't that tough.

2.With the check valve removed, blow air into the single inlet. If you can blow air through it, this check valve is shot. It's about $14 and should be replaced.

3.If the Vacuum Filter is soiled looking by holding it up into a bright light, and looking at it, it should be replaced.

4.The best method if your budget will allow, is to buy those vacuum hoses as a kit. They are color coded, and come with instructions.

Vacuum hoses diagram


You will probably need to look at a repair manual for your Omni to find a vacuum diagram. Parts stores would sell them, public libraries might have them. If you have throttle body injection, the vacuum hoses are much simpler and fewer than if you had a carburetor with all those emission requirements for those years. I have an '87 Sentra, carbureted. Miles and miles of vacuum hoses !

How to connect vacuum hose from/to air filter - Camry 2003


Usually you wouldn't connect a vacuum hose to the air filter, but if its a DIY job your after you would need to get the male connectors and some other hardware to do a custom job (drilling required) otherwise to have the same effect you could just connect a vacuum hose to the Intake Manifold or throttle body.

The Intake manifold usually has some spare slots for small vacuum hoses.

To locate follow the air filter box tube back to the throttle body, the throttle body, the intake is directly off this and connects to the engine. see diagram

How to replace the throttle cable on 1996 sinfire


InstructionsThings You'll Need
  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers
  • Torque wrench
  • Clean shop cloths
  • Replacement gasket

      Take out the air cleaner resonator. Disconnect the harness connectors for both the idle air control and the throttle position sensor. Label and then remove all the vacuum hoses from the throttle body.

      Remove the bracket and the cables for the accelerator control from the throttle body. Loosen and remove the throttle body fasteners.

    • 3

      Lift the throttle body off the manifold. Remove the throttle body gasket and inspect it carefully. Replace the gasket as needed or re-install the old gasket to the throttle body after cleaning all the mating surfaces thoroughly.

    • 4

      Set the throttle body on the manifold and finger-tighten the fasteners. Torque the bolts to 89 inch pounds.

    • 5

      Install the cables and bracket for the accelerator cable, then reconnect the vacuum hoses. Reconnect the harness connectors for the throttle position sensor and the and idle air control valve, then replace the air cleaner resonator.

    • 6

      Depress the accelerator pedal to test its movement and to assure that there is no binding. Press the pedal to the floor one time then release it. Make the necessary adjustments.

Hi It is almost impossible to get my 86 1.6L Nova to start after being shut off for several hours (overnight) I put a new fuel pump & filter on which didn't help then put an electric pump on. Still...


Under hood fuel lines, touching coolant or heater hoses.
Fuel lines under vehicle close to or not shielded from exhaust pipe, converter, muffler. Fuel lines pinched or crushed.
Fuel filter changed recently.
Fuel pump pressure. Fuel pressure regulator & Fuel pressure sensor.


The age of your vehicle also guarantee's a vacuum leak. It may sound silly but the truth is rubber grommets, and hose's shrink and dry out over time and the harsh environment under the hood makes it worse. Check all vacuum lines and fittings attached to the intake manifold, valve covers (pcv valve), and be sure to check for a vacuum fitting on top of the intake just behind the throttle body. Does it fit tight in the hole? You can seal loose fittings with a high-temp RTV (Red) silicone sealant/adhesive. Several small leaks add up and your engine, heat/AC, and transmission will be all to glad to tell you about it.

Aside from that, if you are still having problems, Have a look at the MAP & Oxygen sensors. Finally, you may end up replacing the TBI throttle body assembly.

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector.
  3. Disconnect the breather hose from the valve cover.
  4. Remove the air intake tube.
  5. Disconnect the throttle cables by opening the throttle and moving the cable through the release slot.
  6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the throttle body.
  7. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor and the idle air control valve connectors.
  8. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
  9. Remove the throttle body and discard the gasket.
  10. Remove the TP sensor.
  11. Remove the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.
  12. Remove the throttle body retaining nuts.
  13. Remove the throttle body.

To install:

  1. Install the throttle body.
  2. Connect the TP sensor connector and the IAC valve connector.
  3. Connect the coolant hoses to the throttle body.
  4. Connect the vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
  5. Connect the throttle cable.
  6. Install the air intake tube.
  7. Connect the breather hose to the valve cover.
  8. Connect the IAT sensor connector.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Fill the cooling system

zetecvacuumtz6.jpg user_offline.gif If it's equipped with the 2.0L SPI engine (eighth digit of the VIN is 'P'), the most common place for a vacuum leak on these engines, is from the PCV hose that runs from the valve cover to the back of the throttle body. Where is the carb on a jeep grand cherokee 1993 4.0 liter


There is no carburetor on any of the 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder Jeep Grand Cherokees. They have Fuel Injection and a throttle body which looks like a carburetor scaled down.

Instructions on how to remove and replace the throttle body follow:

Throttle Body REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the vacuum hoses from upper bonnet, unfasten the retaining clips and remove the upper bonnet assembly.
  3. Remove the lower bonnet retaining bolts and lower bonnet.
  4. Remove the throttle cable and the return spring.
  5. Disengage the wire harness connector from the injector.
  6. Disengage the wire harness connector from the WOT switch, ISA motor and TPS.
  7. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines from the throttle body.
  8. Tag and disengage the vacuum hoses from the throttle body assembly.
  9. Disengage the potentiometer wire connector.
  10. Loosen throttle body retaining bolts and remove throttle body assembly from the intake manifold. To install:
  11. Clean the intake manifold and throttle body mating surfaces of old gasket material.
  12. Install a new gasket and the throttle body assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  13. Engage the potentiometer wire connector.
  14. Engage the vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
  15. Engage the fuel lines to the throttle body.
  16. Engage the WOT switch, ISA motor, TPS, and injector electrical connections.
  17. Install the return spring and throttle cable.
  18. Install the lower bonnet and fasten the retainers.
  19. Install the upper bonnet assembly, retaining clips and vacuum hoses.
  20. Connect the negative battery cable.

Idles high after starting


Older cars tend to get vacuum leaks, either by detiorated hoses, or something being overheated, or accidently knocked off. A can of carburetor cleaner can be carefully sprayed using the extension tube, near the hoses & connections of vacuum lines to identify any leaks while the engine is running. Just spray a shot at a time near the areas (hoses, Throttle Body, Intake) in question and the engine will slow down if it sucks in the cleaner. Other than this, there's the throttle position sensor and idle control motor to test. Look around the engine compartment & be sure nothing is loose or obviously broken. There is a schematic diagram of the vacuum hoses in your engine compartment & you can check to be sure what it says is supposed to be there, is still there.

There should be a vacuum diagram sticker located somewhere under the hood that shows everything you need to know.
