Question about 2006 Hyundai Tucson 2.7

Overheating, hyundai tucson engine overheats, redlines then drops

During normal operation the heat indicator goes into the red zone. sometimes it stays there and I hav to turn off the engine other times it goes into the red and slowly drops while the vehicle is still operating. What is the problem? Thermostat?

Check radiator fan motor first, if good check fan belts. then check thermostat. also check radiator for blockage.

A car can overheat for a lot of reasons.First make sure this is the problem by checking the radiator hose or water level. Open the radiator cap when the car is cold, crank it, and then watch the water level. If it drops when the car warms up this is not the problem.
The tools you will need will depend on what you have to take off to get to it. If you can access the thermostat you should only need a ratchet or wrench to remove it and something to scrape off old gasket with.
Location:The thermostat should be inside the thermostat housing on the motor. Follow your top radiator hose to the place where it goes into the motor. There should be a sort of dome shaped housing there with probably a bolt on either side of it.The thermostat is inside that.
This is a reasonably easy job, but shouldn't be done carelessly. It's also kind of messy.
When the car is cold remove the bolts from the housing with a ratchet. Lots of coolant and water will drain out. But the thermostat will be visible.Pay attention to which side of the thermostat is up.It should just lift up. Remove all the old gasket from around the area and clean it up well. Replace the thermostat and gasket then the bolts. Be very careful not to over tighten the bolts or the housing will be ruined.

Only 2 parts remaining are the thermostat and waterpump. Always start with the thermostat when diagnosing an overheating problem. If the car is overheating constantly under all conditions and coolant is backing up into the reservoir, it's very likely to be the thermostat. If it only overheats at low speed or idling, it's more likely the waterpump.

the water pump is working
the problem indicates blocked radiator cores preventing full flow at high rpm
have it flow tested by an accredited radiator shop or just fit a new radiator

The overheating and lack of cabin heat both point to a failed engine thermostat which would be stuck closed. At the warm up stage, the coolant stays in the engine block to bring the engine to efficient operating temperature, then it opens and circulates the coolant through the radiator and heat core. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will overheat, and coolant will never reach the heater core, and you will not get cabin heat.

Blinking oil light at idle which goes away during driving could be a low oil level, but may also be a drop in oil pressue. You could have a clogged oil fliter (at best) pickup tube, or a failing oil pump.

Where do you hear a valve or flapper moving??? Behind the dash ( instrument panel ) It sounds to like you have a electrical problem , not overheating problem . You need to test to see what the real engine temp. is . Also have vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ,Sounds like A/C is kicking on , the flaper noise you hear is probably the temp actuator inside the dash . You can buy the tool in the video at harbor freight cheap. Point it at upper radiator hose ,near the engine . The IPC illuminates the hot coolant temperature indicator in the message center when the IPC determines that the coolant temperature is greater than 128°C (262°F). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the coolant temperature. Are you getting any such message ?

You are describing a slow coolant leak and the resultant no heat and blockoverheating symptoms. The no heat is because there is insufficient coolant to cycle through the heater core, and the chuggin you describe is the engine indicating serious overheating.
With engine cold, you must add water--not anti-freeze--to the radiator itself, until it reaches the top of the radiator, then start the engine. If you do not have a radiator cap in addition to the overflow bottle (some vehicles don't), you must still add water to the radiator, even if you have to bypass the overflow bottle hose to do it. Add water until no more will go into the radiator. Start engine, let idle until operating temperature is reached. Thermostat should open and a good bit of the water will "sink" into the depth of the radiator. If you have no radiator cap, observe the temperature guage. When it reaches normal operating temp, when the thermostat opens, the temp will drop briefly at first, and you will notice warm air from the heater/defroster.
Once engine is warm and known to be full of water, seal radiator cap and/or system, and let idle for 30 minutes. Use this time to locate the "mystery leak." They can be very hard to find, and some won't leak until after the engine is turned off. During this idle period, observe the vehicle exhaust from the tailpipe as well as looking for actual water leaks: sometimes a bad head gasket can be diagnosed this way; if the exhaust is white and thick like steam, and smells like anit-freeze, you have a more serious problem. It is possible that after the repeated overheating cycles you have endured you may now have both a "mystery leak" and a blown head gasket.
Once leak is located, your next step is to let engine cool completely, drain the water, fix the leak, and then and only then add new antifreeze of the proper rating and ratio recommended by Chevy for your vehicle.
Anytime you drain a cooling system and refill it, it is necessary to check the overflow bottle at least 3 times in the first week after repair to ensure that you have the proper coolant level, and have not either missed another leak or not correctly repaired one. You MUST check it before you drive the vehicle the second time after the first repair attempt because it is normal to need to add more coolant than you added initially after the repair because of air trapped in the cooling system that will only be expelled after the first start/stop heating cycle. If after 1 week of daily normal driving you have only added a little more coolant once, and there are no more problems, you can be very comfortable that you have fixed your car.

Your English is very good.

From what you have described, which is a rapid over heating of the radiator coolant fluid and therefore a hot engine condition, it would appear that the thermostat in the engine's cooling system is faulty.

If the thermostat is sticking in the closed or nearly closed position temporarily, there will be no flow or very little coolant flow between the engine and the radiator and the engine will overheat.

You have advised that after the engine is shut off , and radiator coolant fluid has cooled, you re-start the engine and drive the car without the overheating condition occurring again and the radiator coolant temperature is normal. This time there is no overheating because the thermostat is working normally.

You should have the thermostat replaced as soon as possible because allowing the engine to overheat can cause very expensive engine damage.

If you had a continuing overheating condition then I would suspect both the thermostat and the water pump. However as the overheating seems to be only temporary, and clears itself after you have shut down the engine and re-started it 10 minutes later (without further overheating arising) then I think you only have a faulty thermostat.

Please also check that the electric fans which draw air through the radiator are operating. These run on a temperature sensor and will switch on automatically once the radiator coolant fluid reaches a certain temperature and then switch off again when the fluid temperature reduces. You will hear them running once they start up. If these fans are not working the radiator coolant can quickly overheat in various driving and temperature conditions because there will be insufficient air flow through the radiator to cool the fluid. If the temperature sensor is faulty or has died, or if the electric motors running the fans are faulty, the fans will not operate.

Waterpump, seems like a likley culprit. Your Ac compressor belt runs over your water pump. when the ac is on it puts more load on your engine , your water pump may be defected and not able to handle the extra load.
