Ball joints chevrolet pickup

Ball joints on 1998 k2500 will not last more than 5,000 miles. Brand doesn't matter. HELP!!!!!!

  1. Remove the steering knuckle with wheel hub and bearing attached.
  2. Remove the lower ball joint flange with a chisel.
  3. Install J9519-E and J34874 to the lower ball joint.
  4. Remove the lower ball joint from the lower control arm using J9519-E and J34874


  1. Install the lower ball joint and J9519-E, J41435, and J45105-2 to the lower control arm.
  2. Install the lower ball joint to the lower control arm using J9519-E, J41435, and J45105-2.
  3. Remove J9519-E, J41435, and J45105-2 from the lower control arm
    1. Install J9519-E and J45105-1 to the lower ball joint.
    2. Flare the lower ball joint flange using J9519-E and J45105-1.
    3. Remove J9519-E and J45105-1 from the lower ball joint.
    4. Install the steering knuckle with wheel hub and bearing attached. Install the tire and wheel.
    1. Lower the vehicle.
    2. Check the front wheel alignment.
these jouints are pressed in and there is a flange that is flared this is what the tool numbers refer too.

Jack the truck clear of the ground and let the wheel assembly hang. After you remove the tire place your jack under the lower control arm so it's firm. Remove the cotter pin, if you have one and loosen the big nut almost off. Wedge a "pickle fork" between the control arm and the spindle and give it a belt with a hammer until the ball joint pops. Raise the jack so you can undo the nut easily and separate the control arm and spindle.
The upper ball joint is riveted or bolted in. Grind the rivets or use a cold chisel and remove the ball joint. Clean up the area with some sandpaper, dirt , loose rust, etc.and put the new joint in. Put the spindle back on using the jack if necessary and put the nut back on and tighten.
The lower ball joint is pressed in. Tie the spindle out of the way and brace the lower control arm with some blocks or the jack if you have to. A few whacks with a hammer should pop the joint out. Clean the hole out lightly, just to remove loose rust and dirt. Put the ball joint, minus the grease fitting ,,in the hole and use the jack with a block of wood, to put it in place.You may have to fiddle with the spindle to make sure it is lined up. I've never had any trouble using a 1ton trolley jack and the weight of the truck to put the lower ball joint back in. Replace the nut and grease fitting.
The new ball joints will probably come with cotter pins, use them. Make sure the new joints are tight or they will wear the holes in the spindle. Don't forget to grease the new joints. Hope this helps.

The ball joints on both 2wd and 4wd upper are pressed in you need to remove snap ring and using a hammer pop out the old one out this is after you seperate the upper arm from the spindle. To install the new ball joint you should use a ball joint press that you can rent at most autoparts shops

Raise vehicle up on jack stands so that the stands are under the lower controll arms and the suspension is "loaded" Remove the front tire(s) (if you break the torque on the nuts while the wheel is still on the ground it helps, but do not loosen them completely as you will be looking for new rims and wheel studs too). Place a drift or some other suitable object in one of the brake rotor vanes so that it will hit the brake caliper and stop the rotor from moving and remove the CV shaft nut (it's a big ****** make sure you have the right socket on hand before getting to this point). Next remove the brake caliper and rotor then undo the wheel bearing retaining bolts and remove the wheel bearing. This should give you enough room to move the axle shaft back and up so you can work on the ball joint. If you've had ball joints replaced before just unbolt the ones that are installed and using a pickle fork, or a block of wood and a hammer, drive the ball joint stud from the knuckle. (make sure to support the upper control arm so it doesn't drop down on you when you do this) If you are working on original ball joints then I reccomend placing a block of wood or something else that will protect the cv boots from drill bits ect and drill out the rivets holding the ball joint in place. then remove in the same manner indicated in the previous paragraph. installation is pretty much the reverse of removal and don't forget to torque your cv shaft nut I have a 1999 and the manual specs 103FTlbs... This is a critical torque as it helps preload your wheel bearing. Too high and you'll burn them up, too low and they'll be loose and wear out.

The most likely cause is a worn ball and socket (not the 'ball joint' on the suspension) on the Pitman arm for the steering linkage. The steering idler arm's ball and socket may also be worn. The parts are cheap, but it is a PITA to remove the Pitman arm. This can be checked by seeing how much steering wheel play you have before the wheels do anything. Looking at the Pitman arm while doing this may scare you. I drove with a bad one for ~1 year, and was always scared the ball was going to pop out of the socket and result in no steering.

Price for upper ball joint on a 4.3 liter


The upper ball joint on your pickup is a pretty easy job for an experienced technician. It should be about $60 for the ball joint an hour or so for labor ($100? prices vary by location) and then an alignment would be in order which is about another $100. So, $260 for one side with an alignment would be a fair price in my experience.

you need hammers impact tools and some time.
i use cut off pipes and plat washers to pull them back into place. i use hammers to get the old ones out.

Ball joints First you would start off by unloading the ball joint by jacking up the lower control arm to see if there is indeed tire play indicating bad ball joints, raise the bottom of the tire with a pry bar and see the amount of play that you have thru the ball joint. You can also see if ball joints are bad by looking at the grease zerk on the bottom...BAD ball joints will have the zerk base level with the control arm...There should be atleast .050" sticking out To take apart mark and count the torsion bars. Undo the torsion bars. Remove all components in the way such as your brakes calipers (tie them up so you dont ruin the brake hoses), rotors, 4 wheel drive. Remove the steering knuckle. Check your spindle and bearings while you are in there to see about wear and such. Several ways to get the rivits out...Drill out the center of the rivit...take a dye grinder and cut a X in the head of the rivit and knock out with a hand chissel...or use the tourch (becareful due to the fact of ruining the control arms)...or use an air chissel (cutting an X in the rivit head will aid in removal. Replace with high tension bolts upwards as of grade 8 and use teflon nut with some locktight. Replace steering knuckle and the rest of the components removed in the disassembly. Tighten torsion bars to previous spec. Take vehicle in for an alignment due to having fresh ball joints in. No need ruining new ball joints after vehicle was used to driving with loose ones in
