My 1982 F150 runs good cold but will not start when hot, no spark from distributor

My 1982 F150 starts and runs good when cold but will not start when it is hot. There is no spark from coil. I have replaced the control module and coil. Symptoms are the same. My truck has a magnetic pick-up from the crankshaft.

Do you know if your starter is bad? If you have not had this check perform these simple steps to check your starter. Place flathead screwdriver on top of your selonoid switch and another screwdriver to the positive battery terminal. If your starter is bad then vehicle should start this way. If you get fire this way replace your starter.

Try replacing the water temperature sensors. Sometimes there are 2 with one working the dash and the other working the engine. You are probably running too lean. The "cold start sequence" kicks in at a cold to warm temperature. If the sensor is stuck on hot it will be too lean to start.

You might try a new thermostat that may be more responsive than your old one. Check air filter for condition.

I replaced starter on 1989 f150 5.0 now have no spark

Mike, Check for diagnostic codes. Check fuses/relays,wires/plugs for pinched, damage or corrosion. Could be a lot of things like distributor armature, cap, rotor, stator, ICM, coil, spark plugs, wires, make sure ground is good to distributor. Use the attached forum links, instruction, guides to help diagnose ignition spark problems, Good luck

My 92 f150 starts missing and losing power when ambient temperature reaches 85 degrees. Can a weak fuel pump cause this, truck runs great on cool days and at night

Check the fuel pressure when it's messing up ! Also check for strong spark ,pull a plug wire off a spark plug an hold to ground ! Ignition problem maybe - ignition module ? A weak fuel pump would be weak hot or cold ! Now electronics are a different story ! I have had ford pick-ups from the age run great cold but when they got hot quit working altogether ,then when they cold down , they started right up again ! The important thing is to test not guess , be sure what's wrong before you replace parts ! There is a good video on you tube from scanner Danner on a ford pick up you should check out ! Good luck ,hope this helps !

Wont start when hot

If you recently had a waterpump replaced or leaking, i would say its the opti spark distributor. Main problem with the LT1 engines the water leaks all over distributor that sits behind pump causing the start no start up. When ever you change the waterpump always include the opti spark and wired connector.

Edelbrock and Carter both make 2 bbl. carbs for 351W. that will fit stock intake.
Distributor should not turn on it's own. Only with the engine running

When the motor is at normal running temp and i turn the truck off it will not start till it cools down

U will need to replace the TFI ignition module and the distributor stator to cure this, the TFI is mounted on the distributor, the stator is in side and you will need to remove the distributor and pull the shaft out to replace it.
