Good luck with that, it's a big job. There are no external timing marks on the crankshaft pulley, if fact the pulley is not even keyed to the crank. The best way is to remove the timing cover to gain access to the chain tensioner, crankshaft mark and balance shaft mark, you'll need a good three jaw puller to get the pulley off it's a tight press fit. There are darken links on the timing chain that have to all line up with the marks on the cam sprockets, crankshaft and balance shaft. If you try to do it without pulling the timing cover and you let any slack in the timing chain the balance shaft will most likely be out of time. I have the engine out of the car and it's still a big job, I don't know if it's even possible to do with engine in the car. There are 3 small bolts down in the area where the timing chain is, don't forget to take those out. You don't need to remove the cams to get the head bolts out. They tell you to use special tools to keep the cams from turning once chains are removed, a piece of 3/8" flat steel or aluminum plate works. On the back end of the cams there is a flat machined on all the cams when the timing marks are lined up those flats are all in a line. You slip the flat plate under the cams, you may want drill a hole in the plate and bolt it down with the valve cover bolt at the end of the head. I bought a Haynes Manual for that car, it's not the best, but it gives you most of the information you need. Make sure you get all the gook out of the bolt holes use blow gun with a long line on it, like a piece brake line. Spray some brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner in the hole then blow them dry. Oil the threads and the washers or use anti-sieze. When you torque the head bolts it say's to torque them to 22 ft.lbs. and then turn the bolts another 60+60+60 degrees totaling 180 degrees or a half turn. Good luck!

SOURCE: We are replacing a head gasket on a 2001 Olds

It is a tight fit, but it can be removed if you remove the 'shelf' above the engine that houses the wiper assemply, and I have seen people lower the engine by unbolting the cradle-put a block of wood between the jack and the engine/transaxle, and unbolt the cradle bolts, lower it so you have enough clearance to pull it out (works on both 3.5 and 4.0 motors, it really helps to have 2 people to do this-also, if you haven't don it yet.scribe the bolts and slots on the hood bolts and remove the hood, make your life much more enjoyable.

Ihave a 2001 olds intrigue oil is getting into the intake making car smoke i have changed the pcv and the intake gaskets but still getting oil in the intake bad how is the oil getting into the intake.

It sounds to me like the valve stem seals might have shrunk, if that is the case you will need to have the cylinder head reconditioned.
Go to a good workshop and see if they will do an exchange, that means you take your cylinder head off and swap it for a reconditioned one. Or have your mechanic do that if you don't want to go through the process.

Gas pouring from tailpipe

Make sure you use OEM Injectors. The white smoke might come at a 3.5 from a bad gasket bewteen the intake manifold and the throttle boy or if you have the 3.8 from bad gaskets between the intake manifold and the engine.
