it could be that the ignition lock and/0r the brake pedal sensor that unlock (allows you to move the shifter) are/is not working correctly or has failed. You will have to check both those elements as well as the cable beneath the consul covering and the solenoid that pulls the cable.

2001grand prix will not shift to any ges t

I need more information. When you say "...will not shift to any ges..." I assume you mean gears. More importantly, are you saying the gear select lever (shifter) is frozen in place and will not move? or are you saying you can move the shifter, but once you have done so the transmission will not engage and move the car? Also is this a stick shift or an automatic?

If cruise control is selected, it engages automatically at a certain road speed. Your description indicates that you are confused about the overdrive function.

Automatic gearbox has reverse only no drive tries but wont move forword, drives fine backwords, gear oil level ok and still red in colour no leaks

check your gearbox selector mech somthing may have come apart with wear and check it from under the vehicle but mostly be safe when you do this it may take a second person to select gears as you observe wats going on at the gear box end if its elect select you will find the selector has gone faulty try a pre used part

SOUNDS LIKE YOUR SHIFT CABLE IS BROKEN TAKE YOUR CENTER CONSLE APART BY THE SHIFTER AND YOU WILL SEE A CABLE THAT IS CONNECTED TO YOUR SHIFTER MOVE YOUR SHIFTER BACK AND FORTH AND YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR PROBLEM.

Automatic gearbox

Does the car have over 60,000 miles? if so have you changed the fluid and filter in the transmission? worn out fluid can cause these and the filter starts to plug and starves the valve body of fluid, hence the delay.

Automatic gearbox

Service the transmission fluid and filter, this may be an issue of a dirty filter and worn out trans fluid, use one of the newer synthetic fluids.
