SOURCE: land rover discovery 1994 gear selection

Hi there!

I'm a Land Rover owner myself - old school Series models.

This sounds like major gearbox trouble.

As the selector shafts are different for gears #2 and #4, I may be inclined to think there is an external problem around the base of the gearlever.

Probably cheaper to have a look here first.

If you've been offroading, it's possible you've managed to get a stone in there.

With the covers off the transmission, if there is no fault externally that you can see, then the gearbox may have to be stripped to find the obstruction.

You can always join one of the Landrover forums to assist on this and other matters.

Hope this helps you. If it does, please rate as Fixya! Thanks.

SOURCE: automatic transmission is stuck in 2nd gear (limp mode)

most newer vehicles  have transmission control modules, that go to a default of 2nd or 3rd gear when they go bad!  I had a 91 plymouth stuck in 3rd gear because of this module! could be your problem!    when mine went out, it smelled like something electrical burned inside the the passenger cabin! I would check all the electrical connections on the transmission first    good luck

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.

Suzuki 1,3 auto swift gear box has problem changing from 2 to 1 driveengages with a clunk. Told it is software that needs reprogramming after a clutch change. is this correct?

find shop that can diagnose a bad t ranny, Automatics are complex ,
also the PCM , you cans scan it for t ranny DTCs fail codes, i see you are scan too free, right>? why not look, i bet you get P07xx errors.
The TCM (in the PCM brain) has what is called failsafe, if the TCM
detects gross slippage or other errors its drops to failsafe. (DTCs too)
and limits the gears available , all of this is in the FSM and the tests are complex. fixing a A/T with no FSM book is "near impossible"
FSM = a real Factory service manul
or at least go to alldata.com or mistchells, and read those sections. online.

Can you engaged the Automatic gears into manual whiles driven?

It will have the answer in the owners manual but if you have a auto shift pattern that allows you to move the lever side ways from drive all this does is by pass the auto sequence and locks the box in the gear you have selected until you select the change. Like fixing the gear in a low gear so that you can go down steep inclines and use less brake letting the engine do the work Check it out at a dealer any way

Automatic gearbox has reverse only no drive tries but wont move forword, drives fine backwords, gear oil level ok and still red in colour no leaks

check your gearbox selector mech somthing may have come apart with wear and check it from under the vehicle but mostly be safe when you do this it may take a second person to select gears as you observe wats going on at the gear box end if its elect select you will find the selector has gone faulty try a pre used part

I'm driving an automatic gear car. At traffic light, do I put gear to neutral and pull handbrake, or do I continue to step on the brake. Any difference on either action.

just keep your foot on the brake. It cannot do any damage, the auto box is designed for this

If you put in neutral you risk making a mistake and selecting reverse. or may not select gear inadvertantly on a hill and roll backwards.

Did you change the starter solenoid -it's mounted in engine compartment on the passenger side,
The transmission is slow to shift initialy --that sounds like its loosing internal pressure which means trans is worn out. You could try some additives that might help--but that's only temperarly.
