Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I own a 2003 Alero and the Service Engine Soon, ABS, and Traction Control light is on. What should I do without putting a lot of money at it without knowing it will make the dash lights go off? The local mechanic hooked up a small computer to it and said it was a front wheel barringbut if they change it it might not take care of the lights on the dash.

I had almost exact same problem with my BMW. If it came on after the batter artery was unhooked that maybe cause. As to solution no matter how many times I was told there was a reset (I had one on control module inside car), the light did not go off. My mechanic, a German man who is excellent mechanic said this happens more often than not and could be short "somewhere" after searching I never found a way to turn it off. He suggested I just leave it on. I knew there wasn't anything wrong with car so I did just that. Eventually it would go off and come on randomly but has never gone off completely nor has it hurt the car in any way I can discern. If you know it needs bearing get that fixed and if light stays on...I suggest you just leave it as long as you know nothing else is wrong with the car. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: abs and traction control light stays on

Cheapest option would be to have the fault code read by a dealer or specialist. Its likely to be a wheel speed sensor but its finding which one that's the problem. You could disconnect each one and take an ohms reading across the connections. They should all be the same or there abouts. Change the one thats not. If your lucky the light may extinguish. If not the fault will need to be cleared using diagnostic equipment.

Anti-Lock and Trac Off lights are lit on my 1999 Alero, as well. They usually come on after about 5 minutes of driving, but are not always on when I start the car.

SOURCE: 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis brake and ABS dash lights on and off

The red brake light is the key here. That usually indicateds a hydraulic problem. Check you fluid level in master cylinder and see if it is low. Also the level indicator sensor there in the master cylinder maybe sticking or corrioded. If ABS sees the red brake light it will shut off and turn on the ABS light, also traction control would be disabled as well.

I have a 03 alero that once in a while the ABS-check engine & traction control lights come on. Then the next time it starts they are not on.

when the abs lights the system will store a fault code.using a scanner with abs capiblity
will retrive the codes.
i would guess a wheel speed sensor is starting to can inspect sensor wires(@ each wh.
for being loose/dirty also check fuid level if not already done

good luck

Abs light, trac light, service engine soon light 2001 Pontiac Grand Am

Sounds like you have a bad wheel speed sensor. You need to have it scanned. Since it's been sitting, it might just be a bad connection to one of the speed sensors.

I have 1997 cadillac deville the abs & traction control and service engine soon lights are on. Right now I am trying to figure out the problem with the abs & traction control lights. I have checked of the...

service engine soon is a mere fuel problem....make sure youre putting premium fuel only in your tank...throw a hand held code reader on it and I would bet you money its fuel related..usually nothing at all to worry about...the code reader can also turn off the light for you

Lights on for service engine soon anti lock and trac off

Id have to know what code has triggered the Service Engine Soon light in order to diagnose that. It could be related to the anti-lock and traction control system being off or it could be something separate.

That said, it is common for the anti-lock and traction control to be turned off if one or more of the wheel speed sensors goes bad. In some cases the wheel speed sensors are separate from the wheel bearings but in your case I believe they are integrated with the wheel bearing, so in order to replace the sensor you have to replace the wheel bearing.

In order to know which wheel bearing is the culprit, you'd have to have the car hooked up to a scan tool capable of reading ABS codes.

Took 800 mile trip

The ABS and traction control are ususally one in the same and will require a mechanic with special tools to diagnose. You can check to make sure the brake pads are not worn out (it is about time to replace them on this year car) that the wheel sensor wires are in one piece and amke sure the brake fluid is changed (This needs to be done every 24,000 miles on any car). As for the Check Engine light, you'll need a scanner to pull the code, but check the gas cap as this is the most usual culprit. We have a 2004 Grand Am (very similar to the Alero, but without the traction or ABS) and the only time the Engine light came on was when the cap was loose.
