Question about 1996 Land Rover Range Rover

P38 misfires and pops when hot

Starts from cold easily and runs smooth. When at normal temp, it misfires at around 1800 revs, loses power and occasionally has loud popping sound. I can usually get it running again by kicking down and accelerating. It runs fine at kickdown. Had new plugs, leads and coil pack..

It is possible that you have access carbon buildup around your valves or on top of the Pistons that gets hot and on cruise causes the engine to misfire. It is also possible that you have some water in the mix that is forced through under normal conditions that under cruise conditions is causing problems also.

Thanks Trevor. I had a good check through all the connections and leads without luck and checked all vacuum hoses with ether spray. Couldn't find any leaks. I disconnected the MAF sensor and drove it, nothing changed, problem still occured so I'm wondering if the sensor is bad. I think other checks are beyond my capability now and fear a visit to the garage is necessary.

I think that would be the right choice. We all like to save a quid but we can often end up paying more for trial and error.

If your check engine light comes on get it checked. To me it sounds like an engine misfire probably cause by a coil pack or spark plug wire going bad. The misfire should cause the check engine light to come on maybe even flash if the misfire is bad enough

Only warm air comes out of heater on 89 cutlass ciera core blew out, new thermostat what controls air temp in heater system. Lever moves from cold to hot easily but can't tell if it moves anything under...

#1 Listen if you hear the blend door flap open and close if you do then working good.

#2 run car to normal temp and touch both heater hoses and make sure temp is similar if one is hot and the other warm then your heater core is clogged and most likely that can be the problem it build lime from having tap or well water in coolant system distilled water is recommended but who uses that.

#3 run car when cold with cap off @ 2k rpm and top off radiator. Then close cap and continue to rev @2k until normal temp if heater hoses are not equal in temp heater core clogged.

Initial start up the engine sounds like its running on 2 cylinders under powered intil the temp gauge reads normal ???? any body got the answer please

Cold starting misfires can often be caused by either tired high tension spark plug leads or ignition coil packs. If replacing leads, then replace with a full, new set. Coils can be changed individually, but it is often the case that if one has failed, then the others aren't far behind. Some cars have individual coil packs on each spark plug. Some cars have a single pack for all plugs and some have coil packs which may control two or more plugs.

To check for a misfire (ignition failure) follow these steps:

(Cold start) (Use a pair of insulated pliers)

1) Start the vehicle

2) When the vehicle starts misfiring, disconnect plug leads or coil pack connections one at a time. If the vehicle idles even more roughly, then that plug or pack should be considered fine.
Replug each connection before disconnecting the next one. Once you disconnect a plug lead or coil pack connection and find no difference in poor engine running, then you have likely found the offending cylinder. Check the spark plug condition, lead and/or coil condition and connections on that cylinder.

3) Replace components as necessary.

1993 jeep grand cherokee loses power at operating temp.

ever do a real tuneup this decade
spark parts, and filters. that be first
and make sure the hot engine (sized not stated) is really hot.
180F or more, and holds, it must reach normal spec, temp.
or the ECU brain will not do its job right.
the only clue I have here is skips
skips must mean misfire.
there are over 50 causes of misfire.
bad spark plugs tops the list.
and all spark parts there, cap/rotor,wires set this OLD.
car is old , needs a major tuneup

they to forget all that other stuff, and elaborage
what skips means.
i guess never cold does it skip.

taCH DROPS TO ZERO BUT engine not heard to stall?
if yes, electrical problems or CKP failing?
what does engine do when TACH does that, matters big time.

After my 94 plymouth voyager 3.0L gets to runnig temp it misfires and stalls once in gear.It runs fine when its cold. I did a tune-up and still have the same problem

Have fuel pressure checked when it starts to misfire/stall and driving down the road at normal speeds.
Not unusual for fuel pump to run at proper pressure when cool, but lose pressure when warmed up. If it's only running bad when off accelerator and stopping or turning and runs down the highway good, remove and clean AIS/IAC motor. ( idle speed motor ) Once cleaned, if it runs better for a while then starts to act up again, replace it.
