The only test is to watch it on a live data scanner while the engine is cranked over, then compare it to the graphs in the factory service manual. Resistance testing doesn't work here.

How to test a crank angle sensor in 86 Nissan hardbody


Sensor detects engine rpm, and piston position. It is integral with the distributor, not replaced separately.
Testing the sensor requires complete testing of the ignition system. Use a spark tester to check for bright,. blue spark. This is called secondary spark test. If weak or no spark, test the ignition coil for proper specs of primary and secondary resistance. If coil is good but no spark, suspect the crank angle sensor. My manual gives no further information on testing the sensor. It contains a light emitting diode and a photo diode. The lights are used to show up the slots in the rotor disc that has 360 slits in it.

Replacedtiming belt and it wont start


run fault codes and check for crank angle position sensor problem as it is on the back of the crank pulley and is possible to damage it and rotor ( check air gap for the sensor to rotor) or not connect up the wires when finishing the job.

How do you change the crank angle sensor in 1997 mitsubishi triton v6 petrol? Do you have to take timing belt off?

Car stopped while driving. Tried to start it , but to o avail. Turns over , but no spark. Changed coil changed distributor changed rotor and still nothing. Any ideas?


Hi, you will need a voltmeter to diagnose the problem. Set your meter to DC, turn the key on, and check the voltage at the positive coil terminal (black wire with white stripe) with the other probe at engine ground. If no battery voltage, suspect your ignition switch or fuse. If you have battery voltage to the coil, next set your meter to AC and check voltage across the coil primary winding (black wire with white stripe and other black wire) while someone cranks the engine. You should have at least 1 volt AC or more. If no AC voltage, suspect your crank angle sensor inside the distributor. The distributor would have to be replaced, so you would want to be sure it's bad. There are some specific tests you could run, but I would need to know the exact engine you have to provide correct test procedures.

  1. Disconnect the CMP electrical connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  3. Using a voltmeter and check the CMP power source between terminal B and a known good engine ground. The voltmeter should read approximately battery voltage.

    If reading is as specified, proceed to the next step. If reading is not as specified, check power supply circuitry.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, check the CMP sensor ground circuit, by connecting the meter between a known good engine ground and terminal:

    E16i engine- terminal D . CA16DE and CA18DE engines- terminal A .

  1. Continuity should exist.

    If continuity does not exist, repair open in ground circuit. If continuity does exist, proceed to the next step.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. To test the sensor 180° signal, connect a logic probe between the following terminals:

    E16i and CA18DE engines-ECU terminal 17 and a known good engine ground. CA18DE engine-ECU terminals 21, 31 and a known good engine ground.

  1. To test the sensor 1° signal, connect a logic probe between the following terminals:

    E16i and CA18DE engines-ECU terminal 8 and a known good engine ground. CA18DE engine-ECU terminals 22, 32 and a known good engine ground.

  1. The logic probe should indicate that a pulse signal exists in both tests. If a pulse signal was not present, inspect wiring. If wiring is okay, replace the crank angle sensor.

Got in and started like normal, a tiny twist and it starst right up like always. Go 50 feet and start over a speed bump and it died with nonoise or warning. No spark anymore


do you still have power? if no check for loose battery cables or main fuse
If yes do you get spark ?if no check for pulse on crank angle sensor with a lab scoope ,but you can test both wires going to the coil check for a pulse while cranking
now check for all grounds on body
check for fuel relay maybe grounding

My 94 Mazda 626 quits running while I am driving, but starts right back up. i have replaced egr valve and fuel filter. fuel pump tested out at 40 PSI


Your "crank angle sensor" may be getting to the end of its life: the fault you have described is a common symptom of this failure. The sensor is easy to replace but not cheap to purchase.

Car wont start


being 94' im sure it has high miles, cam and crank sensor common to fail over time do to wear and heat exposure. check the basic, make sure you getting fuel and sparks. fuel pump only work as long the engine is turning over due to the crank sensor sense the flywheel turning. crank sensor may be faulty. no sparks, check coil make sure is good and putting out 12v, auto zone can test it for free. good coil, than check cam sensor, cam sensor senses the cam turning and tell the ecu to tell the coil to disperse the sparks to the plugs. cam and crank sensors, there no way of testing it but replacing the unit unless you have the special equipment to test it; both is fairly cheap to replace, check ebay.
