Question about BMW 323i
Remote centrel locking has stopped working off the key but does work manually putting key in door
It can be replaced but not very easily. There are several places on Ebay that offer this service $30 to $50 you buy the service on there. Then ship key to them they repair and send back. Besides replacing the rechargeable battery several also replace the 3 micro-switches as part of the service. Cutting the fob apart if one wrong move and you can damage anyone of the components on it which then make it more expensive to repair. I tried it and found for $30+ it's a lot easier for someone else with experience to do.

SOURCE: Central Locking not working
I'm running a E34 Tds Touring with a similar problem, my rear doors and tailgate have dropped of the central locking circuit.
I have been told it is the Central locking Module a large black box under the dash that is faulty, apparently a common problem.
Hope this points you in the right direction,
Please remember to rate my effort!

Before you bring it to a garage and pay good money check the fuses. Usually its as simple as that (located near the battery in the engine bay)
Hope this helps.
