The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon or small picture of an engine) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

SOURCE: automatic transmission is stuck in 2nd gear (limp mode)

most newer vehicles  have transmission control modules, that go to a default of 2nd or 3rd gear when they go bad!  I had a 91 plymouth stuck in 3rd gear because of this module! could be your problem!    when mine went out, it smelled like something electrical burned inside the the passenger cabin! I would check all the electrical connections on the transmission first    good luck

SOURCE: limp mode on a automatic

Firstly, disconnect the battery and leave it for a few hours. Reconnect and try the car again. This resets the memory in the TCM. If the car picks up the faults again, it will go into limp mode again after a short while. If it's been a while since you changed the fluid, then put some seafoam transtune in to clean all the parts and plates. Then after a few days at least, preferably a week, go for a fluid and filter change. After this, you'll probably find it will go into limp mode again, just disconnect the battery again and reconnect after a few hours. I had the same problem in my chrysler T&C. I left seafoam in it for a week and it cleaned up all of the gum and varnish build up on the shift solenoid pack and plates.

If the problem persists, and after you find it allows you to change gears for a while and then goes into limp mode, it could be gummed up solenoid pack, or input speed sensor.

Go to o'reillys and plug in their diagnostic tool. It should provide you with the fault codes if any. If no codes, then your TCM and ECM are in good shape, and if you're lucky then it'll be something simple like a sensor, or solenoid. Try cleaning it first with seafoam transtune in the fluid for a week.

If all else fails, and their are fault codes, then take the car to a trusted transmission repair shop for a road test. The computer could be picking up slippage and making the car go into limp mode. This could be the clutch plates if no errors with the TCM, ECM are present, and you've ended up checking out the input speed sensor, and solenoid pack. The latter can cause hard shifting and slippage too, if the seed sensor is set to signal when to change gear, but the new oil, or old oil have made the friction slightly different to what it is used to or within factory limits. Firstly try reseting the TCM by disconnecting the battery for a while and see what happens.

Good luck

1993 hyundai sonata has check engine light on and is stuck in limp mode and wont shift out of second gear

the .pcm puts it in limp mode and it will stay in mode until light is turned off. You need to get the trouble code, repair it, erase the codes (with a scanner that retrieves the codes), and then you will be out of limp home mode.

Transmission shifting problem

limp mode is when the engine will not exceed set rpm's to protect the engine and gear box. What you have is a solenoid / servo that is not working properly due to several possible faults.. Check and/ or change the transmission oil. clean the filter. Have the bands and clutch packs adjusted. Have a pressure test done on the box to determine any internal faults . run the fault codes to check for a fault in the TCM

Mercedes suffer with the radiator whereby the gearbox oil and engine coolant leak in together and cause gearbox to stay in lower gears like limp mode this will also give incorrect readings on coolant so worth getting both gearbox and coolant checked i beleive they call this a glycol test??

Car stays in 2nd gear all of the time. (Limp mode) Fix Engine light stays on, D green light blinks constantly for automatic transmission Honda Accord 2005

Ah, I see. You want to outsmart the computer? Right logic, wrong computer. I think the problem is not in the transmission, but it is the engine computer that has communicated with the transmission computer and put the car in limp-in mode. The fix engine light is sent from the engine computer, and this is the main computer in the car, the main drive train computer, if you will.
The short answer is yes it will reset, by just unhooking the battery. Won't do any harm. Start it up about an hour later, and be sure and let it warm up to normal operating temperature (closed loop) before you take it out for a test drive. Otherwise you may be miles from home in 2nd gear limp-in mode again.
The real fix is to talk to your car...like communicate with the computer and get those trouble codes read...talk to it nice, not the abrupt tone of the glaring idiot light, and maybe it will respond in a kinder, gentler easy to fix diagnostic code!!!!
Good luck.

2002 Impala: transmission limp mode...

Most transmissions have a limp mode, or limp-home mode.
If the driveline computer thinks there is something wrong, it can lock the transmission into one gear, such as 2nd gear. Usually reverse will also be available. The Impala automatic has 4 speeds. 2nd speed or gear will get you home, but the engine rpms can get a little high. I wouldn't get on the expressway will in limp mode.
Before taking to the shop, you might want to try and reset limp mode by turning the car off for a couple minutes, or you may have to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

Trans stays in limp mode, speed sensor has been changed, speedometer does not work, if speedometer head was bad or unhooked, would that cause mw problem? It is a 1995 chrysler cirrus

Hi,
Your engine management and maybe even your transmission is controlled by the ECU. As such, many ECU units are fitted with a 'limp home mode'. When it detects that something semi-serious is wrong, it enters the limp mode, which means that the engine won't rev beyond a pre-programmed speed, you can't accelerate very fast, or you may indeed be speed-restricted to 40 mph or similar. The transmission may even stay in one or two gears. The alternative would be to either let you drive at regular speeds, with the danger of letting you trash your car or stopping you from going anywhere .
You should have a Check Engine light. Go to a major chain auto parts store and they should read the ‘code’ for free, then go to rdtiburon.com and ask what the code actually indicating or is really bad to your car. They will advise you what you ought to do.
Because you replaced the speed sensor and are still experiencing the problem, we suspect that you have a faulty speedometer cluster.
Please check this link and go through the article to have an indepth knowledge to your problem....

Code 24 is a vehicle speed signal sensor fault, the sensor most likely does not provide a useable signal until about 25 MPH, when the computer doesn't see any signal after that speed it turns on the light. Make sense?
