Unfortunately there is no simple answer to your question. It depends on your skill level as there are many intricate things that need to be done before you even start the job.Firstly you need to determine the timing settings for your make or model.Secondly you need to find the timing marks for the engine and set the engine up at top dead centre.this means that the first cylinder is at the top of its compression stroke. It is then important that the motor cannot be rotated in any direction because to do so will completely ruin your chances of tying the motor with a new distributor.Thirdly you'll need the equipment to carry out the removal and replacement of the distributor. Finally you need a timing light to reset the initial timing once the repair has been completed.
I would suggest that this is a repair that should be carried out by a skilled person. Not necessarily a mechanic but somebody who has training in that area.
Do you still proceed?

sounds like you need a new distributor.... if you had a new water pump put in lately and didnt change the distributor that would be your main problem. The water pump in located in front of distributor, if that leaks it will short out and fry the distributor. Always change distributor when water pump goes.

Remove distributor cap have someone tap the key while you watch the rotor inside the distributor if it does not move that is the problem then it could be the gear shear pin has broke or cam is not turning distributor.

Changed distributor cap now car will not crank

You should check to make sure that the rotor button is in place. Also check the coil wire and the fire orderr to make sure that no wires are crossed. These are pretty much the only reasons why your car won't crank with the distributor cap change.

Engine turns over but no spark at the plugs. checked coil ok changed ignition moudle no luck changed rotor no luck. checked voltage from coil to cap getting 12vdc. checked voltage going to and coming out...

You can change pick-up coil, you need to remove distributor (mark where rotor is pointing first) Then you need to remove pin in cam gear on end of shaft to remove gear so you can remove shaft from housing. Then you can replace pick-up coil. Install in reverse. Note when removing distributor rotor will move to the right as you lift distributor out, move rotor to right of mark you made when installing distributor back in.

I need to change my distributor on my 1994 golf.

Pull the distributor and look for the series number, or take it down to the parts house and have them match the distributor to a new oem replacement. Takes the guess work out of the engine build code.

Oil in distributor

I think the seal around the distributor shaft is the primary problem. The oil is definitely causing the engine performance issues.

Spark is not bright blue from distributor

Change out the high voltage wiring to the plugs and to the coil. If no help, change the coil. Make sure to use a clean spark plug to check the spark.
