Timingmarks on a 6.5l gmc diesel engine are they all at 12 o,clock,and top dead centre on no one compression stroke?

It is always best to set your timing at top dead centre on the first or number one cylinder.That way everything else should fall into line.

This is just a shot in the dark... But i THINK the # 1 cylinder needs to be @ top dead center.... And the rotor needs to be pointing at the part of the cap where the spark plug wire connection for cylinder #1 is.

Dodge dakota 3.9 v6 year 2000 where should rotor point to on cap when cam gear dot at6 and crank gear dot at 12 and on tdc compression stroke it points to number 4 on cap when cam dot at 6 o clock


Make sure you are on the compression stroke. At TDC of compression stroke, the rotor should be pointing to number 1 on the cap. Either you are on the exhaust stroke, or the distributor is 180 degrees off and needs to be reset.

The cam gear mark should be at 6 and the crank gear mark should be at 12 so they meet each other.

My warrior is getting gas and spark but will not start it timing is right and i changed the head and valves what is wrong with it


check for proper compression you could possibly have the timing 180* out and not be aware of it..bring the #1 up to top dead center and recheck the mechanical timing.. because there is 2 top dead centers..one on compression..one on the exhaust stroke.. you may have the wrong one..you need the compression stroke..

Need to get cams on compression stroke


I there are many ways to see if you are on a compression stroke but the best and most definitive way is to remove the rocker cover and watch the vavles as they move up and down while rotating the engine by hand by hand by hand with the ignition turned off.
When you are on the compression stroke both the valves for that cylinder will be in their highest position and there should be some slack between the valve and the rocker arm.
When timing and engines this is usually done on number one cylinder top dead centre compression stroke.

SETTING TIMING ON 95 GMC SIERRA 2500


350, 305, 400. Crank shaft gear mark is straight up to the camshaft gear and the camshft gear is straight down to the crank shaft gear. If your looking for the rotor button / distributor. The button should be pointing to the number one cylinder (drivers side front) On the compression stroke. To find the compression stroke pull the number one plug , put you finger over the hole, crank the engine untill the pressure pushes your finger off, then put a stiff wire in the hole and turn the engine by hand (wrench) untill the wire comes up and just starts to drop. Move it back and forth to get top dead center. On the distributor Number one and number eight should be horizontal with the radiator.

Had the head cleaned up , need to put the cps / distributor back in i need to know the proceedure for this


u need to find top dead center on number one cylinder. to do this remove rocker cover and watch rockers move through there cycle. inlet valve opens on a downward stroke sucking in fuel, then closes the next stroke up is compression stroke and fires at top dead center then fires cylinder down. the exhaust opens on the up stroke pushing exhaust out. The top dead centre you need is after it has compressed the air fuel mixture.
then issert distributor with points clossed on No one cap and work through the firing order of the engine placing the leads arround in that order.
Hard to explain but hope its a help

I have a diesel car its not built with a distributor cap


LOOK I'M REALLY SORRY I DID NOT RECONIZE IT WAS A DIESEL A OLD BATTERY OR A HOT CLIMATE WILL MAKE THOSE DIESELS START HARD THE CAR MANUFACTURES KNOW THAT SO WITH A DIESEL COMES DIFFERENT MATINANCE SOME OF THEM HAVE A DECOMPRESSION SWITCH SO YOU CAN LET OFF SOME OF THE PRESURE WHEN STARTING .. THAT IS WHY WHEN THEY GET A DIESEL ENGINE STARTED THEY DO NOT LIKE TO TURN THEM OFF THEY ARE VERY HIGH COMPRESSION AND THE FULE EXPLODES REAL CLOSE TO TOP DEAD CENTER WHEN THE PISTON IS MAKING ITS STROKE .. 1996 gmc safari, 6cyl.-distributor gear broke.replaced.can't time


Roll the engine around until the compression stroke on number one cylinder (both valves are closed) and stop on top dead centre. The rotor should be pointing to the number one terminal on the distributor. If it is not extract the distributor and replace it with the rotor pointing to number one. That should be it. Hopefully their are no other issues relating to the original breakage so you should make sure the new distributor is spinning normally.
