Question about 1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Hi. My merc 1999 C 200 lefthand rear CV joint next to the diff got loose and broked the cover of the diff. I replaced the diff cover as well as both left and right hand sideshafts with cv joints. From there the car's automatic gears only goes into first gear and reverse gear.and does not kickdown or change any gears. With that all of a sudden my ABS and SRS warning lights are on. Can you please assist me with info.

Hi Pieter, The rear shafts both have ABS sensors which are gear like rotors and send signals to the computer. The signals received govern the ABS the traction control and speed sensors which in turn supply info to the transmission control and govern gear change. Have the rotors examined for damage and the pick up sensors which can be located on each of the four wheels. I suspect that one of the rear rotors is out of alignment or there is damage to one of the wheel sensors. Regards John

The best thing to do is call a "mechanic buddy" and have a case of beer on stanby. But if your determined to do it, than at least get a haynes or chiltons book to help with exploded view of the parts breakdown. I would start by jacking the rear end on stands and taking off the tires, the rear brakes and rear bearing assemblies. The cv shafts line up like a regular driveshaft on a rwd, so make sure you don't whack any of the splines up around the edges where they meet the transaxle. I will tell you if you're not comfortable with doing your own brakes, you will do yourself a galactic amount of good by finding someone who is to help you out.

If doing it yourself go to http://www.Rockauto.com they have parts going back 60 years and are extremely fast. A normal CV joint/shaft e.g. GM costs about $125. 2004 Buick Rainier four wheel is stuck in AWD drive all the time .


All wheel drive is just that-- All wheel drive-- not to be confused with 4 wheel drive . The difference is with AWD there is a 3rd diff in the transmission that allows the front and rear wheels to operate at different road speeds . When 4wd is selected that 3rd diff is locked and so both front and rear wheels drive at the same speed regardless of ups and downs in the road surface . This results in a torque wind up in the drive train and places load on "U" joints --splines --CV joints and gear teeth . The grinding on turning corners will be the CV joints trying not to flex because of the torque wind up . How to prevent this problem=== Do not use 4wd on hard road surfaces === as the tyres cannot slip to relieve the torque Restrict the 4wd use to snow , mud and loose surfaces TO fix the problem unselect 4wd drive and reverse several yards to release the pressure in the drive train and the actuator has a chance to pull the gear out of lock up. If that doesn't work check that the actuator is actually working

What tools are needed to chang rear cv joint in a 2002 mercury mountaineer


Basic tools..remove wheel, remove axle nut, remove brake caliper, remove lower control arm bolts,remove the bolt for upper control arm, remove the outer tie rod bolt, support vehicle and suspension, the hardest part is getting the axle out of the rear diff, sometimes a simple pry bar will pop it out, but I've run into a lot where you either need the special pickle fork or even have to remove the complete rear diff with axle still attached, remove cover and take out c clip.if you continue prying and hammering between inner cv joint and diff, you will cause damage to diff.the cv joint is steel, cast maybe, and diff is aluminum so guess what will be damaged first? That'll lead into a pretty expensive repair.the special tool to remove axle is 205-529

Clunking and whinning when locked in awd


check the cv joints for wear. check rear drive shaft for worn slip joint splines and "u" joint wear. When you lock in awd there is no centre diff to allow the variations between the wheels and so you are experiencing a torque build up between the front and rear diffs . This put stress on the entire drive chain so any looseness or worn parts will display noises. Remember that the awd lock should be only used on surfaces that allow the tyres to slip and relieve the stress ( dirt road---snow---mud--ice )

How to remove both front cv axles from front diff, i have every thng off and this aint my first rodeo, so whats up with getting the inner cv joint out of the diff.


If you have everything loose so the CV axle will pull out of the diff, try this: Using two flat head screwdrivers, put them beteween the inner edge of the joint and the diff. GENTLY pry with both screwdrivers 180 degrees apart ( like at 3 and 9 o'clock). there is a clip in a groove that has to retract al the way in to release the halfshaft. It can be very frustratiing as I have been there done that. try rotating the axle about a quarter turn and then use the two screwdrivers again. some times you just have to find the "sweet spot".

How to replace front cv shafts ?


remove inner cv boot, just on inside edge is circlip which holds inner bearing joint into outer housing remove circlip and separate joint outer housing does not come out of front diff unless you drop or remove whole front diff assembly
will have to remove whole stub axle hub assembly to remove drive shaft from outer wheel stub axle (hub) assembly

Grinding noise front end.


I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

How to replace a cv joint on a 2005 toyota corolla, i cant get the cv joint back part off the transmittion. driver side cv joint broke and rear part is stuck to transmittion..


There are two types of cv joints used. One type bolts on the other you have to pop out. Do this by prying it out with a big screwdriver. A c-clip hods it in and it will pop out for you. When reinstalling be sure it seats back in.

Cv joints wont come out of diff housing (95 Rodeo 4x4 diesel)WHY


You might have to remove the diff cover and remove the lock rings from inside the diff.
