SOURCE: 1988 ford ranger

Though it's a bit late from when this question was asked... But... I replaced my timing belt before it broke. Like anything else on my 88 ford ranger it was the easiest thing! If your really carefull and remove the plugs! You must remove the plugs because of the compression that's there waiting to fire when you next start the car. Dissasemble the fan, fan cover, and the pulley and the plastic cover. Not exactly in that order, just what you need to access the belt. Score or mark or paint where one or two teeth of each pulley is in reference to a non moving part of the truck (you can rotate the whole thing to a convient setup by hand) make sure when you rotate the assembly it feels somewhat free you can see and feel that there is no tension on the belt in ANY area. When you have all the marks set up loosen the bolt holding the tensioner use a bar to move the tensioner out of the way just enough then tighten the bolt on the tensioner, that will keep it locked open while you simply and carefully slide out the belt then slide in the new belt keeping the marks 'still', just go slow and keep your eyes open. Maybe I just got lucky...But the theory is sound and worked for me.
Probably could use a diming light to make sure but I don't have one and the truck still runs fine. Oh and by the way... if you ever need to replace the heater core it'll take you all of 20 mins if you have even the basic of abilities and the right screw driver :)

SOURCE: 1987 Ford Ranger stuck in 4 wheel drive!!

Chances are the linkage for the transfer case is out of adjustment try loosening the adjuster bolt and put the 4WD shifter into the position 4WD high or low (depending upon which position it's lockup in) then lock down the adjuster bolt, try to shift out of 4wd sometimes you need to go forward and backward with the vehicle to get it out of 4wd, when you get it out of 4wd you may have to fine tune the adjustment to get it to engage and disengage smoothly it's a trial and error thing keep resetting adjuster until you get the desired effect.

Does the 1987 4x4 ford ranger with the 2.9 v6 have one or two fuel pumps?

It has 2, one in the the tank and another inline between the tank and engine. Little tip: if your not getting fuel to the engine try replacing the filter first. it's a lot easier and less expensive and most likely where the problem is. I have an 1988 Ranger that clogs the filter almost every time I run the tank dry.

How to change timing belt on a 1987 ford ranger 2.0L 4C 5speed

You need to get a manual. Try the Haynes manual for your car. Try autozone; generally available for around $20. This is not the type of thing that can be covered here in enough detail to do you any good.
Buy new timing belt. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove timing belt cover. make sure cylined #1 is set at TDC. making sure all componets are properly alligned and losen tensioner to remove old timing belt. Install new timing belt. Tension belt, ensure all components are alligned properly, replace timing belt covers and reconnect battery.
