1997 2500 5.9 prolbems starting

My 1997 Dodge Ram some times starts right up on about the 3or4 revolutions of the enigne. It wil go on this way for 5or6 starts. Then I will try to start it and all it will do is just trun over. I have found that if I trun the key off and on as I'am trying or push in and out on the clutch about the 3or4 time It will start right up. It seems as if there is a bad or corroded connector or wires or maybe the clutch position switch might be going bad. Becouse the clutch needs to be all the way in to start. Can you help me with this? I live in Kingman,Az and this might have somthing to do wiht it. It gets hot heer and some times I haft to clean the fuses that have gotten corroed by the elements of the dust and heat of the valley. Thank you. Rick W.

You are correct in that this is a clutch switch problem. This is the switch that is actuated when you press the clutch in. Either there is a loose connection, or my guess would be that the switch contacts are worn out or corroded. This switch will need to be replaced. If you have an auto zone or napa parts store near you, they will have a manual (if you need it) to locate this switch.

Hope this helps,
Chad

You might either need a new starter or an alternator or you may need a new gas line or clutch. If you have a carburetor, try putting gas directly on the carburetor and try starting it then. If it does not crank right away, you need a new starter or alternator.

That sounds like a problem with the ignition or with the start motor.

The problem is probably with the starter motor,
the fact that the problems disappear when you leave the clutch a bit, is because the motor have more friction, as he must pull the motor, and this cause the starter motor engaging more easily. However if you keep using this method you can damage the clutch in the long term, and that will be a more expensive repair than replacing a starter motor.

1998 dodge neon starts hard, starts by pumping gas pedle 3or4 times.runs fine after starting.

The coolant temperature sensor may be sending a signal that engine is already warmed up, thus causing too lean of a mixture for cold start up, where a richer mixture is required.

I have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 that when i start it revs up to about 1800 rpm then goes right down and quits. I might have to start it several times before it stays running....any suggestions?

Have you checked the engine codes? On your 95 ou can by turning the enigne switch on and off 3 times quickly and then back on. Do not start engine. Then count the flashes to get any codes out of the computer. You can find the codes by searching the internet easly.

This sounds pretty normal since when you first start the truck the engine management system is probably in cold start mode by default. This will cause the engine to do what you are experiencing. It just takes a minute for the sensors on the engine to register with the computer and report on the parameters they are supposed to monitor. Please rate the helpfulness of my answer.

99 dodge ram, engine shuts off while driving let it sit for several mins then will restart.

Change the engine position sensor to start with.
These can and do fail when they get hot - causing the engine to misfire or stop dead.

Checking it wil not be possible - as it only breaks contact when hot.

Starting problem in a '97 dodge ram diesel

Could be the solenoid on the starter. Next time it doesn't start, hit the starter with a hammer or other hard object, then try to start it. If it starts, replace the starter before it leaves you stranded
