Question about 2001 Buick Century

Is it dangerous to drive a car needing a cv joint or wheel bearings?

It started out being a hum like the drone of a plane and now it is a very loud thumping noise.

Its not a good idea to drive this way. Lots of things could go wrong. If your wheel locks up you could cause yourself a bad accedent. Driving your car this way will only cause more damage and expence in the long run.

Wheel bearings.
For quickly ruling out the CV Joint, in a parking lot, turn one way in a sharp circle, then the other way circle sharply. A clicking sound is indicative of a bad c/v joint or 1/2 shaft.
Humming while in motion (most of times it will only occur during a specific speed range - over a certain speed goes away) says a wheel bearing is shot.
Normally you should replace both at the same time... however you can check with a laser temp gauge each front hub after driving. The hotter one is bad - or a less scientific approach is to swerve going down the road. and listen for an decrease in noise going in one diretcion over the other.
If you are turning the steering wheel right, and the noise goes away, the right bearing is bad and vice versa.

You may find it's either a worn CV joint or it may just need greasing up.
Check the bellows for splits, and if OK you can cut the large band that holds it in place, pull it back and check for grease, fill with grease and reattatch using a tie-strap.

CV joints if you notice a difference when cornering, poping like noice is wheel bearings. Check CV boot to see if there is any separation in the boot that would allow the grease to get contaminated.

I would recommend that you replace the complete axles instead of just the boots. The boots may be busted/worn and when the get torn/busted they allow sand/dirt inside the CV joint and the bearing inside the CV joint become worn, it all depends on how long the boot has been ripped, its easier and a lot less messy to R/I new axle. For the wheel bearings they need to be pressed in by a hydraulic press. As far as the procedure goes you have to elevate the two front wheels and secure by a lift of jack stands, then take off tires and take off brakes/caliper and caliper chair along with the rotors. You have to remove center nut on axles and remove lower ball joint from knuckle assemble/ hub. Then remove bolts holding knuckle/hub to the struts. Pull knuckle from axles and the hub is out. If you don't have a press and the proper tool you can take the two hubs and the bearings to a machine shop and they will press out and pressing new bearing for you. As for the axles they both can then be pulled/pryed out of the transmission at this time and be fixed or replaced. caution look out for leaking transmission fluid when you pull axles out. The axles are only held by licking rings and can be easily pulled or pryed out. Have something ready to catch fluid. Replace axles in the reverse of taking out. use a piece of wood on the end of axle if there is need to tap it back in with a hammer, listen for a click or snap when its goes back in to transmission. cv joints should not click as that is the first indication of a failed unit
( going slow and changing direction produces a click,click is a cv joint)
wheel bearings should not be tight as that will produce a humming noise and will result in early failure
because the axle turns with the change of direction ,the distance from the pivot point to the transmission changes and so the shaft will move in and out of the transmission to compensate
take it to an accredited drive line specialist for a diagnosis

Check to see if your CV boot is torn. Usually it is the outer boot towards the wheel, there are a total of 2 boots per side 4 total for the car.

ITS PROBABLY TOUR WHEEL BEARING . IF YOUR GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE LONGER YOU DRIVE THE LOUDER IT GETS. OR IF YOU TAKE YOUR WHEEL AND GO BACK AND FORTH A LITTLE WHILE MOVING AND THE NOISE COMES AND GOES ITS PROBABLY A BEARING . A CV JOINT WILL POP WHEN TURNING HARD AND ACCELERATING . THIS BEARING PRESSES IN WITH THE HUB ITS A PRETTY DIFFICULT JOB IF YOUR NOT A TECHNICIAN WELL GOOD LUCK

No, its your axle drive or cv booth are the problem. Check your cv rubber booth if rip, check both side wheel. Rubber booth is a sealed rubber covering the cv joint of your wheel. Sometimes you feel and you will hear that noise, only when you make a turn. Replace your both front wheel drive axle, ok

Check the cv boots for sepration, splits, cracks ect..
Could also be a wheel bearing..

Is this rumbling wheel bearings or transmission?


If the sound is all the time, no matter what you are doing then it is the Transmission going bad. CV Joints, Wheel bearing will only make the noise when in rotation.. Also remember that this is a front wheel drive car, so it will throw you off thinking it is the wheel bearings or CV joints due to the front wheel drive

Most likely it's a wheel bearing going out.., If you turn to the right, or the left when driving the noise will change pitch. Been there done that.....
