Question about 2001 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid SE. When I try to start it, all I hear is a click. I can jump it off and it starts right up. I have had the battery and starter checked, both are good. I have swapped out relays and checked them also. Ignition fuse is good. I also installed a new ignition switch. I still have the same problem. What am I missing?

Those cables like to corrode down by the battery. Not the most convienient location for the battery also! ;)

SOURCE: 20 amp ignition fuse keeps blowing

I'm curious, does this vehicle have an alarm/remote starter? If so I expect the installer didn't wire it correctly ... it was an all too frequent issue, with inexperienced installers we had .... I would first suspect any add-on device first (if any) ... In answer to your question ... I know it does have a relay (Starter solenoid is a relay and built onto the starter) As far as it being a relay or the IGN switch ... I'm skeptical.

clicking in the fusebox? And the starter could be because you need a new one. or a rebuilt. The clicking is your starter cylinoid.

SOURCE: 2002 Dodge Intrepid accessory/starter relay problem?

Accessory position is turning key towards he driver. Ignition on is away 1 and start is away2.

  • Turn on your headlights, do they work? If not, chk batt terminals
  • If they do, try to crank the engine noting what the headlights do. If they go out, Chk the batt ground cable. If they dim, your batt needs a charge. If they dim and then come back bright when you back off the starter, the starter is bad.
  • Chk for loose engine to body ground. That would affect the accessories. Good Luck, _Ned_

SOURCE: need wiring diagram for 2000 dodge neon

i would recommend buying a Haynes manual, as they have very good diagrams and schematics. If you do not want to buy one, though, you can create an online garage on Autozone.com by registering (which is free) and add your car to the garage to get access to a free manual online. These manuals are kind of hit-or-miss, though, and i have had mixed results with them. But for free, it is worth looking into first.

i hope this helps,
matthew

The knocking and grinding is not a good sign for the engine itself.

If the starter tries to start a seized engine, it will click and not turnover.

The engine may have to be overhauled or replaced with another.

clicking sound heard? starts fast then slows down as you crank over engine?ok try this --at the starter there is an electrical connection -- B+red wire and a smaller wire make sure these connections are tight. if ok proceed to next step--if you hear a low clicking sound when you turn the key and when trying to jump start the car still hear a click sound have someone tap on starter while you try to start it --- if car starts the starter solenoid is bad, anything more please write me back, Lee Davidian

I have an 01 Dodge Intrepid that will not start. It has power, but when you turn the key all you can hear is a click. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a starter, but the battery terminals are prone to extreme corrosion. Check them first, and of course verify you have a good battery.
