My car idles rough when stopped in drive

When i am in drice and stopped the car idles rough and then stops when I take my foot off of the brake and take off. It has a k&n air filter style on it and i think it might have something to do with the air flow sensor. I have cleaned the air flow sensor the air filter and the throttle body and I still have the problem. What do you think is wrong?

SOURCE: ROUGH IDLE / ENGINE SURGE

Check for vacum leaks on hose going from the intake to the brake booster. Also check the dodge.com website. Click on the for users button. Enter in last eight digits of vin and see if pcm (computer) needs a update, or if there is any other open recalls on the van.

I would think the idle speed control valve is defective.

SOURCE: 88 dodge dakota has rough idle and stalls at slow down.

Change/thoroughly clean the idle control solenoid. It may be sticking and causing rough idling.
Cleaning it is unlikely to be more than a short-term solution.

turn the key to the on position a see if you can here a buzzing sound around the fuel tank,if you don't hear a sound then. (be very careful while doing this) with the key off take a fuel line coming from the tank loose,make sure its pointed away from you and turn the key to the on position,see if any gas comes out,if not then your fuel pump is probably bad.

I have a 1993 Oldsmobile 88. It dies when it comes to a complete stop but runs great while driving. Spark plugs were changed today. What else would it need?

try this simple test
put in drive k with the hand brake on only ( no foot brake )
if it idles good then no problem now put your foot on the brake
if it dies out or runs rough , replace the brake booster as it is allowing air into the manifold and upsetting the air / fuel ratio

'96 Mystique 2.0 trouble with idle. replaced idle mixing valve. I don't get any codes, I have to shift to neutral at a stop sign or light to keep from stalling. It gets real rough almost a lope.

troubles at lights may very well mean a vacuum leak from a faulty brake booster
test by stopping and then applying the park brake and taking your foot of the brake pedal
you can do this test in the garage
start the engine , apply the park brake , place in drive
if it idles alright , put you foot on the brake
if it plays up , replace the brake booster

I have a 2006 GMC Envoy, idles rough at a stop when in gear, but levels out smooth when in neutral. Drives smooth on the highway.

check for a vacuum leak in the brake booster. Check this by just allowing the engine to idle with the hand brake on and if ok then put your foot on the brake and if the idle changes then there is an air leak in the booster.

How to recycle cmputer after reseting CEL

1.let car sit overnight. 2. Start engine, put A/C on high, let it idle for 20-25 minutes, 2, then drive car uninterrupted for 60mph for 10 minutes, 3. slow down to 25 mph for 4 minutes, come to a complete stop with foot on brake let it idle for 2 minutes, 4. drive again at 30 mph for 8 minutes, come to a complete stop let it idle with foot on brake for 3 minutes. 4. Drive at 40 mph (turn off overdrive) for 6 minutes. 5. Drive at 20mph for 3 minutes at a time, each time coming to a complete stop with foot on brake for 2 minutes. Do this 4 times. Let the car cool overnight and repeat entire process. Then check status of systems with a code scanner.

Idle good when cold, hotter it gets the worst it idles especially when sitting at stop lights

simple test for a vacuum brake booster
star and run the engine at idle without applying the foot brake
if it gets worse when the foot brake is applied , it is a vacuum leak in the booster ( replace the booster )
otherwise check for failed vacuum hoses including under dash control lines , vacuum leak at the manifold or EGR unit

I have a 1994 Honda Accord 4 door v6. I have rough idle when in drive and smooth idle when in neutral. Also rough take offs from a stop or slow speeds. If I pump the gas pedal a few time the rough take...

  • does the engine miss? bumps is a rythmic pattern?
  • an engine miss will appear to diminish at higher rpm due to centrifical force.
  • other possible problem broken or flat motor mount.
  • is the idle rough in reverse?
  • if not
  • open hood
  • start engine
  • Left foot on brake (hard)
  • start engine
  • watch engine as you select drive
  • still holding brake with left foot / throttle gas with right foot
  • does engine dramatically move?
  • if so replace motor mount on offending side
  • if not possible engine miss or transmission problems
