Question about 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Open Question

Rough idle and car runs hot without over heating.

I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 cyl. One day while heading to work, the car stalled at a red light. Turned the key, the car started, but stalled instantly. I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. Ran the check engine light, and it pointed to a few things (EGR valve, O2 sensor, MAF sensor). I took of the intake and while jockying the throttle while under the hood, sprayed carb cleaner in the intake. Which seemed to help. Now car will idle fine, once you start it and keep you foot on the gas for about 15 seconds. But the car is still not running properly. Every morning, the car will start, almost stall, I will press the accelerator for 10-15 seconds, and it will idle. Now it seems the engine runs hot, although my temp gauge reads fine and the car is not over heating, but definitly running hot. Also my gas mileage has dropped. I've read that a bad EGR valve will have all these symptoms, so I took it off, cleaned it, and re-installed, only to have the problem continue. Any ideas?? I was thinking about changing the EGR valve to see if that would help.

    Ok....I changed the EGR valve, and the symptoms are still present. I just went outside and started my Eclipse, and this is exactly what happened. Pushed in the clutch, turned the key and the engine cranked. I DID NOT depress the gas pedal at this time, and the idle bounced from 400-900 rpms for approx 15 seconds. During that 15 seconds, idle bounced until it stabilized. It started from 400-900, slowly increasing (500-900, then 600-900, etc) until the idle stabilized at close to 1000 rpms. At times idle increased slightly from 1000 rpms to1100 rpms, but they did not decrease passed 1000 rpms. No smoke of any kind/color coming from the exhaust pipe. As I step on the accelerator, there was an obvious inability to take the gas. The engine coughed/choked as a jockeyed the accelerator, and as I release the gas pedal, the rpms would drop to around 500 rpms, but would slowly recover back to a smooth idle at approx 1000 rpms. After a few minutes of repeating this (jockeying the throttle), the engine became more consistent. The engine would accept the gas more fluently, and when the gas pedal was released, the engine would return to a smooth idle approx 1000 rpms. I also performed a very crude vacuum leak check. I removed a vacuum hose and blew smoke from a cigar into the hose and then looked for smoke to emit from anywhere on the engine, and I didn't see any. I have to give credit to a youtube video for that idea. If I was clever enough to think of that on my own, I should be able to figure out the problem with this car. I'm at a lose at what the problem may be, a clogged fuel filter perhaps? Not real sure where it is. I've heard it is located in the gas tank. Or perhaps MAF sensor, or 02 sensor?

    Ok...yesterday i removed and cleaned the IACV, Manifold Differential Pressure Sensor, and MAF sensor.....guess what....the problem is still there. Turned the key, idle fluctuated between 400-900, grabbed the throttle and gave it some quick gas, and the engine bogged down, spit, sputtered, but then took the gas. I did that 3-4 times with the same results, but then it eventually took the gas as I moved the throttle. I sprayed Carb cleaner around without the engine rpms skipping a beat. I'm getting my **** kicked!

have tried tried changing the inline fuel filter. If I remember correctly it is in the tank, but I had issues with mine not getting above 20 mph and have almost no acceleration.Come to find out, it was my fuel filter that was so clogged that almost no fuel was making it to the injectors.

Is your idle speed too slow? should be 700rpm -900rpm. Engine temperature at normal 80degC ?
Have you ever tuned the engine- replaced fouled spark plugs or replaced the fuel filter?

No mention of the fuel pump. Was this checked? This sounds like a fuel pump problem. Have a technichian check this out when you go in next time I am certain this is your problem.

CAR RUNS GREAT, STARTED DIEING WHEN A/C WAS TURNED ON, NOW A FEW DAYS LATER IT DIES EVEN WITHOUT A/C ON, RUNS BUT WILL NOT IDLE


CHECK IDLE SPEED SHOULD BE 650 - 850 RPM. IF IDLE TOO LOW AC WILL PUT DRAG SLOW DOWN ENGINE CAUSING ENGINE TO STALL IF IDLE SPEED IS TOO LOW.

Where is the thermostat on a 2000 eclipse 2.4L ?


The thermostat is in the water inlet fitting where the radiator lower hose connects to the fitting on the 2.4L engine (4 cyl.).

My 2000 eclipse wont start up all the way


I have the same problem on my 2002 Eclipse RS 2.4l 4 cylinder. Replaced the battery, starter, fuel pump(not at one time) . It started up when I had the starter put on as well the fuel pump. But everytime I started the car up it ran good till I turned it off the problem was still there. The car sounds like it wants to start but it sputters you can smell the gas so I know its getting fuel. it starts up fine with a cold start like in the morning.

Try getting a diagnostic thats what Im going to do next week.

Sounds like your IAC (idle air control) motor needs to be replaced. If you are driving on the Interstate/freeway/highway for a bit and then get off, the car dies when your coming to a stop right?

thats one of two things i had the same problem with my 94 honda civic and my 00 mitsubishi eclipse both were not cheep to fix saddly for you man on my civic my tranny was catching and it would stall the motor out idk if that was the complete problem because i sold the car the same day i found out and i do not talk to the guy i sold it too but i seen it running fine a week or so later and on my eclipse it was my ecu for some reason there was a defect or some wires touching or something like that they replaced all my wires and my ecu and it ran fine till i sold it for my 2007 mitsubishi eclipse and gladdly i have not had any problems scince i bought the car
