TOURAN ESP LIGHT ON AT DASHBOARD

I have just bought a 2.0dtise vw touran and the esp light is on at the dashboard.
This car is not a toureg its a touran but couldn't find one on the drop down list
I have tried to switch the esp on and the switch doesn't do anything.
The swith on the centre console just light up off all the time and switching it doesn't take the light of the dashboard.
It has just passed its mot and has covered 70.000 miles but no problems at all with the car i just can't switch the esp on.
Hope its not something drastic as the car drives and runs fine but annoying with this light on.
The person i bought the car off thought it was just the switch as it doesn't switch it on it just stays on off.
Heres hopeing a simple fix.

Hi and thankyou for the reply.

If i change the switch will this take the light off the dashboard as i have been told it might be a computer fault and is dangerous driving the car while the esp is not switched on. Also in my manual it tells me that when starting the esp should atomatically start on its own???.

Hope it is just the switch as they say the electric box's that control this light are around a £1,000 plus vat plus fitting,do you think this as gone or is there anyway without taking to a dealet that i can make sure it is just the switch so that i no that the car is safe.

    Thanks for your time shaun

esp light on the dashboard, just appeared one day. the switch doesn't do anything. it has just had an interim service, and they quoted £1200 to mend. I am writing to VW head office to complain. In the meantime we are continuing to use as normal. Why not complain too? Any other ideas please let me know.

I have a Touran (07/2005 45K) ESP light came on in April. Had it diagnosed to be a faulty sonsor in the control panel of the ABS unit. Cost about £1400 to repair by VW. The VW customer care may contribute up to 50% towards the cost. It is a known fault and VW are aware of it. Check other forums for actions. Contact VOSA and Watchdog to force VW to pay for the cost. It is a legal requirement that the part fitted is fit for the purpose and the ABS should not fail after 3 and 1/2 years.

esplight on all time vw touran 4years old 26ooo miles told abs unit faulty

  • Anonymous May 09, 2009

It is very costly driving with esp. light on. The rear
differential is permanently in drive and consequently is forced in the tight
corners and and end up broken (cost a fortune...)

This is common problem with many vw's
Sounds silly but change the brake light switch under brake pedal.
Often solves the problem (about £8 for switch) will need the light turning out by diagnostic tool.

The Switch is Faulty... I have seen several Different models of Cars with the same Problem ( Olds Alero) You could have the switch changed, but more COST than worth the Fight ( My Opinion ) especially if U aren't having any Problems out of the Car....

It is indicating a fault with system. A very common fault on tourans is the abs control unit going faulty. Unfortunately the part alone is about £1000. It will be worth having the vehicle checked with a suitable fault code reader, I would expect it to return a 'G201 Brake preasure sender' fault. If so the abs control unti needs replacing..

As above, this is a very, very common problem on Golf V, Touran, Audi A3 8p, TT, Leon, Toledo etc. If the diagnostics are saying there's a brake pressure switch fault then there is currently no fix apart from a new ABS pump with ECU. If your car has a full VW main dealer service history, then contact your local dealer because VW are replacing some of these on cars that are out of warranty, on a goodwill basis. But, they will not pay if the car has been serviced outside the main dealer network.

ABS and ESP lights on all the time. I bought Audi A4 B6 2004 only two months ago. It started in heavy rain.

The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP & ABS lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP & ABS system is faulty. You must access the ESP & ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car (placed in dashboard, under a plastic cover above the ashtray). Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP & ABS ECU, in other words reset the ESP & ABS system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

I have an esp button on my VW should I switch it on in this weather or is it on default?

IMPORTANT NOTE: PERMANENTLY YOU SHOULD LEAVE THE "ESP" BUTTON FREE! It is "ON" by default, and ESP warning lamp on dashboard is turned off.
If you need ESP system deactivation for short time, then push the ESP button. The ESP warning lamp on dashboard will be turned on, for warning you that ESP system is deactivated. Only for short time in few special cases ESP system needs to be deactivated when you need to skid the car to go out of a bad situation, (e.g. to start off on slippery road, to climb on hill slippery road, ...). When you push again the ESP button the ESP system will be activated back, and ESP warning lamp on dashboard will be turned off.
If you don't push the ESP button when driving, and the ESP warning lamp on dashboard will be turned on itself accidentally, the ESP system is faulty and it's not active! Then you need to go at workshop for repair the car!

Please do rate my response. Thanks!

Esp off does touran grip better in snow. My touran poor on hills

Electronic Stability Control, works opposite to abs,in that,it stops the wheels from spinning on loose ground/snow by applying the brake to the wheel that is spinning.TURN IT OFF.you WANT the wheel to grip not brake.and as far as being poor on hills, the toureg (amongst loads of other makes of 4x4s),is NOT designed for snow/off road, the four wheel drive just ENHANCES grip/handling on tarmac.(try a Subaru on a track/off road rally).

Same problem...

not sure what country you are from but in England you get 3 year 60000m warranty if you had your touran in 07 then it should still be in warranty.if not then it could be bad news ,the most common problem is the brake pressure sensor it is designated G201and it is a internal part of the abs unit, the unit costs around £900!!.when this sensor fails the only light that is illuminated is the esp light usually if you have a brake switch problem the engine warning light is illuminated also.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

2003 GTI 1.8T ESP light on and cruise control inoperative.

If the ESP light on the touran stayys on pernamently then it is extremely likely that the ABS control unit is faulty. Its a common problem with tourans, unfortunately the part alone is about £1000.
