Is the cable broke between the shifter and the transmission ?

Sounds Like Pressure Plate Or Clutch Plate Are Worn Out ,You Could Check The Slave Cylinder To See That It Is Going Full Travel In And Out As You Operate The Clutch Pedal

or is leaking & the clutch won't release

The fact you continued to drive it when it won't
shift correctly & has been slipping, your done

they are spring loaded and mechanical. if a spring wears out or breaks it won't work. you can replace it with another one but the actual miles won't be there or you could go with a digital set.

You probably have the speed reminder set to 45mph. It chimes & flashes to let you know you are speeding. It will tell you how to adjust it in your owners manual. If you don't like it set it high eg: 100mph. then it won't happen.

how do you remove the gear on the end of distributor shaft so the pickup coil can be replaced

Could try the crank sensor, that is where I would start. Next would be the timing & compression.
