I would look for a bad shift solenoid. This item will be inside the transmission pan and on the outside of the valve body. There should be three of them.

SOURCE: I have a Toyota corolla

I have seen this problem countless times, and no computer can give you the answer, The problem is your ECT. The Engine Coolant Temp sensor. It tells the computer what temp the engine is at and it uses this input to regulate the fuel. When the engine is cold, the fuel is increased to act as the choke for easier starting. As the engine warms up, the fuel is cut back. When the sensor locks cold, the computer runs the engine in choke mode all the time, sending the fuel ecom\nomy down the toilet.

SOURCE: check engine light on, auto transmission shifts gears abruptly

It should still be under warrenty Take it to the shop for repairs It is a transmisson problem but many things can cause the transmisson not to shift correctly. Call your service department and ask if you should drive it in or have it towed and do not drive till you have it figured out. If you have a warrenty and continue to drive it will void your warrenty.

Is this an automatic? I can't tell if column shift or console? With column shift, Did you try taking shift linkage loose from tranny and shifting by hand? There are safety issues with trying that, make sure functional parking brake is set and the wheels are blocked. Also, have a helper sitting there with foot on the brake. Safety is your responsibility.

Maybe just a tranny issue, I'm not a tranny person.

You might be able to start it and kill it in drive? There are safety issues trying this and I don't want the responsibility. Safety is you responsibility.

I have a 96 Chevy suburban and I was driving through the mountains and the transmission kept down shifting or slipping gears help?

Was it loaded with weight? Could have been overdrive. Vehicle should sometimes be dropped onto 3rd and left there under hilly conditions. So as not to shift too much. Suggest checking trans fluid level , possible trans filter change, or add trans cooler to keep temp down in fluid when in hilly terrain. Good luck.

I would change the transmission filter and fluid first. It could be that your filter is old and stopping the transmission from working properly.

If a transmission fluid and filter change does not solve the problem, then it's time for a transmission rebuild or replacement. This can often happen if the car was driven improperly, such as sudden stops and starts, jamming the clutch into gear (in manuals), down shifting while the car is in another gear or from old age.

Car will only drive fwd on 1st gear only and ones it goes over 35 mph I could change it to drive. I have 2001 impala automatic transmision

Sounds like the filter is clogged. Check your trans fluid if it is a black color or so dark you cannot see red anymore it is time to purge your transmission and change the filters. Failure to do this quickly will lead to needing to rebuild or replace your transmission. The best advice i can give is to take it to a reputable shop after you change the filter and fluid if shifting does not improve.

Possible solution:

Too many drivers neglect to change trans fluid or filter until trans is trash.
You might try doing that. Remove the oil pan and install a new filter and clean out the pan gook.
It 's a 25% chance you can drive ok again.
