4 bolts hold the shroud on. 2 on bottom,2 on top. Leave on in on the top until you remove the clutch fan. Clutch fans are a pain to get off with out the right tools. Once off, remove the bolt from the shroud and pull them out together. Remove the serpentine belt. Remove the pump.

What could cause a 1997 chev blazer to overheat

Blown head gasket, water pump, clogged radiator or leaking radiator, timing, faulty thermostat, cracked head, Thermo fans not working. They are a few things you can check without buying expensive equipment to check the engine.
Blown head gasket= remove spark plugs and check them for any signs of water on them. also check for bubbles in the radiator when you remove the cap and do a compression test on each cylinder.
Water Pump= remove radiator cap and see if there is movement in the water.
thermostat= remove and put in water with a temp gauge and see if it opens when the water heats up and at what temp.
Thermo fans= unplug from wiring harness and run a wire from your battery positive and negative terminal to the 2 pin plug, touch the other ends of the wires to the terminals in the plug to see if the therm fans turn, if they do the Thermo sender unit may be faulty or the relay.
If the engine has not had recent work done on it the timing should not be that far out to make it over heat.

I need to change the water pump and I need to know the proper way to do it for a 1997 Chevy Blazer LS 4.3 litre.

First you need to drain down the coolant, secound take top of fan shrould off 2#10 bolts on each side, third loosen fan bolts, fourth take belt off, fifth take fan off, sixth unbolt anything that is bolted to water pump like power steering pump, maybe ac. pump heater hoses ect. last take 4 bolts out that hold water pump to block 2 on each side and thats it. Clean old gasgets off engine block and bolt on new pump with new gasgets witch will come with new pump. Put back to gether in reverse order.

How to change a water pump?

You will need to remove the upper fan shroud, remove the fan clutch that is threaded onto the water pump it is easiest to get the tool for this or you can use a bar between two of the pulley bolts and use a cresent wrench on the big nut. After you remove the fan clutch there is the small hoses on the top of the water pump and the lower hose on the bottom of pump. Then there are only four bolts holding the pump to the motor. Reinstall in reverse order. Let me know if you need more help.
