Evap cannister is located next gas tank . Sounds like vaccum leak problem with engine running open hood and listen for hissing noise in vaccum lines also crawl uder vehicle near gas tank and listen most of the time leak can be located like this.
SOURCE: Check engine light comes on with code P0440.
A p0440 is a super generic evaporative emissions code.
the most common causes are:
-the fuel cap being loose/damaged
-EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve malfunction
-broken vacuum line anywhere (usually easy to find with smoke machine)
-broken filler tube/carcoal canister(where the gas goes in
if it's not any of those it's probably electrical which is a pain and a half to figure out....it shouldn't really cause any problems with the way the car runs....usually after some time other codes will appear and make it easier to diagnose.
hope this helps,
Thomas

I had that exact code a couple weeks ago. Mine needed new oxygen sensors. They(there are 2, only one was throwing a code, but I had both replaced) cost a little over $100 to have replaced.
