Question about Porsche 911

1 Answer

I have a porsche 996 carrera which started making a whineing noise on the way home this morning. It seems to get faster in relation to the revs, but it's louder when at a slow speed and turrning the wheel. Also, when I got home, there is a trail of oily looking drips along the road and up the drive! But there's nothing dripping from underneath the car. I'm guessing I'm losing the power steering fluid? Is this lkely and what would be broken? (can it be fixed on a Sunday ). Any advise would gatefully received.

    Thanks Technopro

It does leak from the centre of the front axle once the engine's running. It's booked in for Wednesday, I hope it is just a hose or the wife could be selling another kidney to pay for it!

If there is no leak underneath the car it means that probably your power steering fluid reservoir is empty. The best way to locate the leak is to pour in a little bit of p/steering fluid, start the engine, turn the steering wheel and then have a look underneath the car. It is probaly a flexible hose which has burst.
Cheers.

I have Porsche 911 996 Carrera 4 2001 And no simcard is working?

If no sim card is working in the audio unit it is more than likely an audio unit fault but to be 100% sure it needs to go on a Porsche diagnostic machine and read out faults. This is because the audio unit is a module called PCM which controls all the entertainment systems on that vehicle. Also the aerial need to be check but can also be done at the same time

Here is a good tutorial that I've used before. You'll need another battery or a charger to power the switch:

The battery is dead, so how do I get the trunk opened?

I found a website that finds a way to jump the car without having battery access. It is actually fairly simple. Follow these instruction: http://perryandcoblog.com/2009/11/17/porsche-carrera-911-996-dead-battery-locked-hood-solution/ Hope this helps! Please rate 4 thumbs up!

What is the comon fault

The most serious common faults are with the standard 3.4 engine in the early 996 Carrera models (not applicable to Turbo engined vehicles which is a different engine design):

1. The engine cylinder liners develop hairline cracks. (Engine replacement or rebuild required).

2. The intermediate shaft bearings fail in these engines (a well known design fault). Failure requires engine replacement.

3. The rear main seals in the engines fail as exhibited by a slowly worsening oil leak. The seal needs to be replaced when they leak. It's an expensive job.

Problems 1 and 2 are serious have resulted in many engine replacements. Problems 2 and 3 remained when Porsche upgraded to the standard 3.6 engine in the series two 996 Carrera models (problems not applicable to Turbo engines)..

There are a few other issues such as Air Conditioning condensers that clog up with road debris and eventually become porous and fail.

996 carrera leak from expansion tank

The shouting was over long ago. Like it or not, and for a multitude of reasons, had to develop a new 911 in order to continue producing one at all. Carrera faithful revolted over such radical notions as a water-cooled powerplant, a longer wheelbase, and more comfort. Power steering-how could it be? These philosophical issues don't really matter anymore, because the old 911 went out of production after the '98 model year, an all-new 911 appeared for '99, and that was that. So we're not here to debate the relative merits of the newcomer versus the classic. That battle is over-or will wage forever, depending upon which side you sit. But the question remains: Is the 996-platformed Carrera a great sports car in its own right? Only a year behind the wheel would tell us.

If you don't have a Porsche dealer near you, check eBay for a Nav manual. Your car should have come with one though. Good luck!
