Do the gauges and warning lights work with key on? If not, check fusible links, AM1 for ignition key power. If the gauges/warning lights work, the key switch has power, so you can follow it to the starter solenoid. The start wire out of the ignition switch is a black/white wire, this is the hot wire to the solenoid, and only has power when key is held in start. With automatics, there is only one switch-a neutral start switch- between the ignition switch and the solenoid on the starter .

With a manual transmission, the black-white start wire goes to both a starter relay and a clutch start switch (on the clutch pedal), those two work together to send the power on to the starter solenoid. So, no crank, good battery, power to key, follow the black/white wire, the start relay and the clutch switch, to the starter solenoid- a hot wire there turns the starter motor on.

I have a 97 Plymouth Voyager, the past few weeks while im driving it, the engine will all of a sudden shut off. There is still power in the van (lights radio heater etc), try restart it and it wont turn...


not starter or alternator do you have any codes? if you have an electronic odometer ,put key in ignition and turn it on and off 3 times without starting engine, and stop with ignition in the on possion and you will get codes where millage is displayed ,at the end of codes it will say DONE

1975 silver shadow starter motor not working


Low battery voltage. poor battery post connections, poor ground, bad or poor POS+ to starter, or solenoid on starter faulty.

Failt possibility ignition switch faulty.

Will not start,OR CRANK, NO NOISE


Do warning lights and gauges come on, when key is turned to on?
If yes, check for power on the small wire at starter solenoid mounted on the starter with the key held in start. If power at the solenoid, take starter off and test for a bad starter or solenoid. If no power at solenoid when key held over to crank, work back to the switch in the start circuit-starter relay, clutch or neutral safety switch,-power from the start wire out of switch is not getting to the starter solenoid.
If no warning lights or gauges work with key in on position, power is either not getting to switch (bad maxi-fuse or fuse link, or bad battery connections-clean and tighten, recheck)-or the switch itself is not sending power out. Check if battery is charged up. Check all connections and grounds for loose, poor connections.
The start circuit starts at the battery, then to ignition switch, then out of ignition switch on the start wire to the clutch switch (or neutral/park on automatics), and on , ending at the starter solenoid on the starter. Somewhere in your starting circuit, power is lost. Start at the battery-check charge, check connections, check ignition switch.

No power to starter moter


Power will run from your ignition switch to neutral start switch on automatics, or clutch safety switch on manual transmissions. Those items, along with a starter relay, are all wired into your starting circuit, the start wire going to the starter solenoid on the starter. Of course, make sure your battery is fully charged. Use a multimeter and verify you have 12 volts to the big cable end on the starter. Now see if any power is on at starter solenoid terminal, with key in cranking position. If is power, remove starter and repair. If no power when key is in crank position, you'll have to trace your ignition starting circuit back to your ignition switch. can be a hassle, but, persistence pays off. BTW, when key is on, your dash lites do come on, don't they? Asking because that verifies you have power to ignition switch.

It could be the starter, test the small wire going to the starter, it should have power when turning the key to start/crank. If it does, and the starter will not crank the engine, whack it with a hammer, if it then starts, replace the starter. If there is no power to the starter, then it could be the ignition switch, or the neutral switch, or a fuse/link blown.

could be dirty connections or bad starter motor pull the small red start wire off the starter check it with a test lite should lite up when you turn the key to start possion if it dont lite up its probably your stater relay

Engine stop while driving, all assy. work, battery test ok, but code reader reads a connection error and eingine will not start or turn over, Any ideas?


Have you tried turning the key from the off to run position, press and hold the brake pedal, and put the truck into neutral, and try starting there ?

Could be a few things, but thinking the DTR ( Digital Transmission Range ) sensor is the culprit. This could also be an ignition switch problem.

The starter motor relay is on the fire wall, with 2 large battery cables to it, and one smaller 16 AWG wire ( orange or orange w/ a stripe ).
Take safety precautions ( block wheels, and have the key turner press on the brakes, while the truck is in park ), and have someone turn the key from off to start. The starter motor relay should have + DC volts on the smaller wire terminal while trying to start.

If you turn the truck to the run position and apply power to the smaller wire terminal, does the truck start ( again, take the safety precautions ) ?

This is assuming the PATS light on the dash goes out when you turn the key from off to run ( do not start ). If it does not , that should be a crank no start issue, not a no crank issue.

BMW 731 the ingnition switch will not turn to start possion


Hello! this seems a similar problem to the Vw Golf, you twist the key to start and zip nothing. I repaired my postmans Golf by (Hot wiring) the starter. If you are up for this? you need to run a wire to the small power lead on the starter solenoid. I did this by purchasing a 10amp push to make button type (Door bell) switch,(Maplins) I fused it and power came from the switched live off the ignition. It is still in full working order 5 years later.
To test that the starter solenoid is NOT the fault, remove the coil or disable the engine so it won't start. Then locate the wire on he solenoid (Usually at the top and of Spade type connection maybe Black/white) remove it gently use an insulated wire from the Positve+ battery terminal and touch the clip/spade connection the starter motor should come to life, be sure not to touch any other parts of the engine with the wire could short circuit and you could start a fire. If you are unsure about the testing I would take the vehicle to a Technician to investigate.
Sorry to have made such an epic about this but it may save you a lot of time and money.
