96 explorer rolls when in park

My 96 explorer suddenly stopped going reverse. makes a whinning noise but no go. all forward gears work fine. also can be pushed while in park

    v6 4.0 4x4 noise appears to be coming from transfer case??

SOURCE: cannot shift into reverse although forward gears all functional

have ur shift linkage bushings replaced....most likely thse are torn or completely broken .. this is common on these models..also on some vw's of the same years

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.

SOURCE: awd 97 ford explorer grinding noise going forward

I ran into this problem, and discovered that i had a faulty front shaft speed sensor. The grinding I had was that the transfer case clutch packs were trying to lock up and engage the front wheel drive. Replacesment of the sensor has not fully rectified the situation though, as it still does it intermittently. It seems to do it at low speed turns and on acceleration. Not sure if this is your problem or not, but it could be. A scan of the computer can tell you if it is the issue though.

Check the transmission fluid and see it's condition. Make sure it's at the proper level, the whining noise sounds like the transmission has low line pressure which would be a bad transmission pump. The "klunk" was the line pressure being high and low right now could ba a faulty transmission pressure line servo. Newer automatic transmission designs often use many pressure control solenoids, and sometimes allow the shift solenoids themselves to provide precise pressure control during shifts by romping the solenoid on and off. The shift pressure affects the shift quality (too high a pressure will result in rough shifting; too low a pressure will cause the clutches to overheat) and shift speed. Check the fuse box at the end of the dash on the driver's side and look for the transmission fuse and make sure it's not bad. You can also try resetting the ECM by placing the ignition to the run position and pulling the ECM (BATT) fuse out for 30 seconds and placing it back in and starting the jimmy. It may stall but let it and don't touch anything. Just restart the engine and everything should be like the way it came off the assembly line and hope the transmission come back to life till you can get it to a transmission shop for a proper scan. sounds like the cable shift has come apart but without my head under the bonnet i honestly couldnt say ,never knew they made a auto version of this car as never seen one here

My 1999 ford explorer will not go into park;all other gears work


DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires

shift linkage needs adjusting,,could be bent, easy fix, located along firewall to fram beneath the column, ask your son wut he ran over and didnt tell u about... hope i could help...:)

1994 Ford Ranger won't shift into drive


In 9 out of 10 cases when I see this problem in the ranger, it is the planetary gear in the transmission. It is made of the cheapest metal available. It breaks usually from going to park before the truck stops or switching from reverse to drive while still rolling. Just a Idea , But I hope it isn't that . Reverse will work fine for a while, and have no forward gears.

Car won't go in reverse


If the vehcile is V6,then the trans model is the A540E,and if it is the 4 cylinder engine,the trans model is an A140E.Both are 4 speed overdrive transmissions,and sorry to report that on just abot every automatic trans on the road,reverse gear failure is almost always a mechanical problem inside the transmission because there are no shift solenoids involved with reverse as with forward gears.And you did say the forward gears were fine.Good luck.
