the best way i have found to test glow plugs is to disconnect the wire to the plug and get you 12volt test light and put your negitive lead of the test light on the positive battery cable so when you touch the test light to any ground the light will light. so now go check your glow plugs and if you have one that doesnt light the light its burned out.

I would check that you are getting a live feed to your glow plugs terminals first, on cold starting, with a 12v test light.

Expensive to renew them, and then find it was the fuse or relay !

The Glow plug coming on, and the car going into limp home mode, is a default safety feature that occurs when the engine management system picks up any kind error message from the many sensors now used on the car.
I've found the glow plug light problem with my Jag, it was the air filter. Apparently Jaguar servicing change it every 3rd service (not a good idea). I changed mine, it is a new car. I had the EPR valve cleaned and a major diagnostic carried out by a local garage (who had the Jag diagnostic software). It turns out I also need a new Turbo; the actuator is sticking (£759.00 plus 3 hours labour). But hey, the main limp home mode problem is fixed and I can drive my Jag confident it will accelerate when press the gas.

I did this exact thing.. I see your date of posting is a while ago, however let me know how you ended up.. If you leave the battery connected while installing the relay you can short it out causing the problem all over again.. also there is a couple points that run along that wiring harness that are known to rub through.. let me know how you did!

p100d error code is due to fault in EGR Valve.The EGR valve shuts off to when 3000rpm is exceeded.so the EGR Valve needs to be checked and replaced. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Got a Renault kangoo 1.7dci the glow light does not go off although van starts ok and seems to drive fine


Best to have the ECU and IP scanned. IP could have shorted leaving the light on. If a relay is stuck or ECU keeps the glow plugs hot. This will eventually burn out the glow plugs.

Renault master wont start off the key but starts on easy start and runs fine


Hi!! I presume your Master has Heater/glow plugs? you wait for the light to go out on instrument panel then crank the engine. If this is so then replacing the heater/glow plugs should solve it. If it doesn't then possibly very low compression and a large job,Sorry. Too much sniffing salts isn't a good thing for Diesels. I hope this helped?

No. Diesel engines have very high compression and require powerful starters to turn over. Cold engines turn over even harder. Batteries for Diesel engines must be robust. Cold weather robs batteries of power. If the battery is more than 2-3 years old, it is probably the battery, but definitely NOT the glow plugs.

Hi,
If you plan on keeping the van with the 6.2 diesel, My recommendation would be to by a Haynes Manual for the 6.2 Gm Diesel engine.
You have a glow plug controller, ( back where the distributor used to be ) a temp switch in the passenger side head, a couple of relays, and the glow plug themselves. The glow plus are along side each injector, about the size of a pencil with a wire hooked on the end. The injectors can be found by tracing the STEEL linens along side the valve covers.The Haynes Manual for the diesel gives a simple step by step guide to trouble shoot the glow plug system. A simple dc volt meter is all you need and a few tools.To copy that for you here would take many pages then you would have to print them out to take to the van. So hopefully you can afford to buy the manual. It will make your life way easier.

P1396 Glow plug monitor fault, bank #2 One or more glow plugs failed or circuit fault

You either have one or more bad glow plugs, a disconnected harness under the valve cover, or you have a problem with the glow plug module. This code is only for californial emmissions trucks, which are the only ones with glow plug modules.

you just got a bad egg mate most of those egines are fine sure nissan and opel use the same engine in there vans. you probly need a set of glow plugs they are very easy to fit and not to pricey.

sounds like a bad sensor. the glow plugs should stay on long enough to reach a certain temperature, especially when it's cold. So turning off after 1 second is not nearly enough. There may be a problem with sensing the temperature of the glow plugs.
